Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job:

To take charge of the day-to-day activities in the joint UVRI-CDC Laboratory.

Key duties and responsibilities

• Prepare periodic estimates for the resources required in the operations of the

HIV Quality Assurance Laboratory

• Coordinate the day-to-day activities of the central quality assurance laboratory of

the project

• Participate in the evaluation of new diagnostic kits and algorithms as well as in

evaluation of the performance of new serologic assays

• Participate in the development and review of laboratory standard operating

procedures

• Advise on the storage of HIV proficiency testing panels

• Oversee the testing of quality control specimens received from testing centres,

using the recommended national testing algorithms

• Review/verify the test results from the laboratory technicians

• Participate in provision of quality control and proficiency testing services for HIV

serology to HIV testing providers

• Carry out quality control tests on sentinel surveillance samples and on samples

from national HIV Sero-Behavioural Surveys

• Send back the test results within the prescribed time

• Arrange for or take remedial action on the results, where required

• Coordinate the distribution of HIV proficiency testing panels to testing centres

• Coordinate the provision of standard operating procedures to testing centres

• Supervise the provision of support supervision of HIV testing centres

• Participate in carrying out training at the testing sites

• Supervise Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Attendants

• Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be assigned by the Laboratory

Manager

Requirements:

• Minimum of a Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.

• A Bachelors degree is an added advantage

• Registered with the Allied Health Professional Council

• 3 years of working experience in a biomedical laboratory. The experience should

have included quality control responsibilities

• Knowledge of HIV testing technologies and protocols

• Good interpersonal relations, Communication skills

• Knowledge of basic Computer Applications

The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has signed an MoU with the U.S

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to strengthen Institute capacity through the

management and coordination of laboratory surveillance, epidemiology, public

health evaluations and training in Uganda under the President’s Emergency Plan

for AIDS Relief. Under this cooperation, UVRI intends to recruit the following

personnel on a one year contract to be renewed depending on availability of

funds. This positions is based at Entebbe
