PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) is a UK based charity/social enterprise with a mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered, quality secondary education across Africa’. PEAS establishes and operates low—cost secondary schools in Uganda and Zambia in areas where access to quality secondary education is limited due to cost and geographical baniers. PEAS’ interventions are built upon 3 pillars of education impact; Access, Quality and Sustainability. Since opening its first schools in 2008, the PEAS network has grown to 30 schools, and we are currently educating over 13,000 students PEAS has a small team of about 10 people in London who provide fundraising, programme and management support to the country teams. PEAS Uganda has about 50 staff at the Country Office team and over 600 staff working in the network schools. PEAS Uganda is seeking to urgently fill the following vacancy.

Position: Finance Officer- Schools
Report to: Finance Manager- Schools

Role Summary: The Finance Officer Schools exists to provide financial oversight and financial services to the PEAS schools network in accordance with PEAS financial policies and standards. This includes support on internal reporting requirements and overseeing/coordinating the work of the finance teams in PEAS schools (School Director & Bursar) as necessary. The Finance Officer Schools will also play a role of supporting the capacity development of school leaders for the day to day management of school finance operations.


FINANCIAL MANAGEMENTAND REPORTING

  • Coordinate and lead the preparation of annual and forecast budgets for PEAS schools in collaboration with school leaders.
  • Facilitate internal audits and the implementation of audit recommendations
  •  Provide on -going technical support to the finance teams and school leaders
  • Ensure schools comply with monthly filing of mandatory financial returns of NSSF, PAYE
  • Monitor the day-to-day finance transactions Ibr PEAS schools
  • Ensure salary and benefits paid to PEAS schools staff are correct and in accordance with PEAS’ HR and policies.

POLICY AND SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

  • Support the periodical reviews and updates as necessary of PEAS schools finance policies, systems and procedures and ensure these meet agreed standards


TEAM MANAGEMENT

  • Participate in the recruitment and induction of new members to the PEAS schools finance team.
  • Provide leadership, management and support to PEAS schools finance team members, which includes providing regular supervision, identifying learning and development opportunities, performance management and conducting annual performance reviews.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience and qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting
  • At least 3 years general accounting and financial management experience Good understanding of accounting and financial standards Familiarity with and experience of using computerized accounting packages e.g. Quick books
  • Good knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office applications especially Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in the training and mentoring of finance staff
