The Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) is a global U.S. Agency for international Development (USAID) cooperative agreement to introduce and support high-impact health interventions in 25 priority countries with the ultimate goal of ending preventable child and maternal deaths (EPCMD) within a generation. MCSP engages governments, policy makers, private sector leaders, health care providers, civil society, faith-based organizations and communities in adopting and accelerating proven approaches to address the major causes of maternal, newborn and child mortality and improve the quality of health services from household to hospital. John Snow, Inc. (JSI) leads MCSP's work in the areas of child health, immunization, and pediatric HIV, with the primary objective of building the technical capacity of ministries of health and other partners to strengthen routine immunization and support the implementation of national and regional level child health services.

John Snow, inc. (JSI) is recruiting for the position of Knowledge Management (KM) Officer in Kampala, Uganda. The KM Advisor/officer position will work closely with the technical staff from two routine immunization (Rl) projects and one child health program led by JSI - USAID’s Maternal and Child Survival Program tor Routine Immunization (MCSP RI), USAlD‘s MCSP Child Health (Ci-I) program, and Stronger Systems for Routine Immunization (SS4Rl), supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. MCSP RI and SS4Rl work in partnership with the Ugandan National Expanded Program on Immunization (MOH/UNEPI) to increase the capabilities of the health system, particularly at district level, to provide timely, high-quality immunization services to protect eligible children and women from vaccine-preventable diseases. MCSP CH provides technical assistance for child health to regional USAID partners, working jointly with the Government of Uganda, to support the implementation of evidence-based reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent interventions.

Within the MCSP program in Uganda, Knowledge Management (KM) is focused on internal knowledge generation, capture, sharing, and applications related to MCSP RI, MCSP CH, and SS4Rl technical products and activities. The KM Advisor, based in Kampala, Uganda, will work internally with MCSP Uganda technical staff and externally, in conjunction with COPINTD, with program partners (e.g., WHO, UNICEF) to promote, facilitate, and document core concepts, tools and processes, results, lessons learned, best practices, and recommendations; promote knowledge exchange; and develop processes for systematic knowledge sharing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with MCSP and SS4Rl country program and technical team staff in Uganda and Washington D.C. to implement KM strategies for routine immunization and CH, with an emphasis on increasing stakeholder engagement in and understanding of the projects‘ routine immunization products/activities and improving the implementation and scale- Develop and implement detailed KM work plans to support the existing immunization stakeholder engagement strategy and the knowledge management activities in the MCSP Uganda CH work plan. For the latter, this includes preparing clear plans for documentation and dissemination.
  • Support the preparation of knowledge management materials, including writing success stories for MCSP quarterly reports to USAID, preparing presentations, and, as needed, abstracts for meetings, technical briefs, journal articles, case studies, and/or blogs and online posts, These will be identified in collaboration with the National Technical Director, Chief of Party, MCSP country support team in Washington, and program partners.
  • Help establish, promote, and maintain a high profile and corporate image for MCSP CH, MCSP RI, and SS4R| through effective implementation of KM work plans. The KM Advisor will work with technical staff to ensure accuracy of content and language and editorial consistency with formats and branding requirements established by the MCSP Communications team (at MCSP Headquarters) tor MCSP products and JSI’s Immunization Center for SS4Rl products.
  • Support the documentation, packaging, systematic dissemination, and storage of information in formats tailored to specific audiences.
  • Work closely with technical staff to enhance their ability to communicate project achievements and challenges.
  • Facilitate and assist in preparations tor knowledge-sharing forums such as meetings, teleconferences or webinars; teaming visits between JSI projects and (across districts), regions, or countries as appropriate; and other knowledge-sharing mechanisms. .
  • Participate in regular management, technical, and other meetings as needed. .
  • Support periodic internal program planning and review exercises.
  •  Any other related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, public health, or related disciplines required. Master’s degree in one of the listed fields and formal training in public health related writing or publication design highly preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in knowledge management, communications, documentation, dissemination, or similar work.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing in English.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring dissemination plans for knowledge products highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of immunization and child health issues highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with reporting and branding guidelines for USAID-funded programs highly desirable.
  • Experience in leading peers through the development of knowledge
  • sharing products and ability to facilitate knowledge sharing meetings and activities.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, with proficiency in at least one local language preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, with excellent Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Word skills; SharePoint experience preferred.
  • Ability to find creative solutions to knowledge-sharing issues and challenges within countries.
  • Experience working with government, NGOs, donors, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Ability to work in complex environments with multiple tasks, competing priorities, and short deadlines.
