JOB DETAILS:
Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings {ESDS) is a global proiect. funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ}. It seeks to improve the energy supply in refugee camps and settlements in Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. By providing advisory services to UNHCR, the project supports the implementation of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework i[CRFtF) of the United Nations. The framework seeks to stabilize host communities and strengthen the selt—reliance of refugees by pursuing an approach that ensures to benefit both refugee and host communities. In Uganda, ESDS develops and implements renewable high-tier energy solutions in displacement settings. among others lor the (UNHCR-lcamp infrastructure. The project guides the implementation of energy assessments in its proiect sites. It also develops proposals for solar hybrid solutions and business models tor the outsourcing of electricity supply ("energy-as-a-service models} that are attractive to the private sector {component 1). Furthermore. it seeks to improve the access to renewable energies on a household level, both for refugees and host communities. This is realized through the promotion of solar kiosks through market-based approaches (component 2}. On a policy level, ESDS works together with governmental stakeholders in the implementation of the CRRF into local energy sector programs (component 3}.

Duty Station: Kampala with frequent travels to Arua

Specfic Tasks
The key task of the solar- and oil-grid energy expert will be to support the team leader with the implementation of Renewable Energy projects in displacement settings. Among others. this includes:
• Tendering and managing assessments on energy demand, production sources and demand forecasts, as well as providing technical guidance to consultants in conducting these and similarassignments.
• Conducting load measurements
• Assessing demand of offices and humanitarian infrastructure.
• Technical and financial design of renewable energy systems and distribution networks, including teasible ICT technologies such as smart metering or digital payment applications into the system design (if possible]
• Close collaboration with the private sector and development of an industry network
• Conducting market analyses, develop business models
• Support coordination and alignment with government institutions. private sector, development partners‘ NGOs‘ refugees and host community representatives and jointly develop concepts
• Advisory service to UNHCR regarding renewable energy solutions. business models and tendering processes
• Support procedures within GIZ, such as tenders. contracts with third parties, site visits Regular consultation with the GIZ officer responsible and cooperation on all project activities
• Support project planification, budgeting, monitoring and knowledge management
• Perform other duties and tasks at the request of management.

Qualifications
• Master's degree in electrical mechanical engineering or related fields
• Relevant trainings and postgraduate qualifications on business and/ or Renewable Energies and related fields are an added advantage.

Professional experience
• At least 5 years of working experien energy project development, business development, installation and supervision in energy supply projects
• Excellent knowledge of the renewable energy sector, especially in the field of decentralized solar energy
• Excellent knowledge of market analysis, demand assessments and market-based business models
• Existing network within the FIE sector and the involved private sector
• Experience in the technical and financial design of mini-grids HOMER and Microsoft Excel skills
• Experience with load measurements and basic electric installation skills
• Experience in development cooperation or the humanitarian sector is a plus.

Other knowledge, additional competences
• Excellent networking skills, incl. interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong organizational and administrative competence, including excellent IT skills (Internet. Microsoft Office. email, HOMER).
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Highly motivated to work in a multicultural and inter-disciplinary team
• Highly motivated to work with tight timelines
• Willingness to frequently travel to project sites across the country, willingness to travel abroad
• very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. and local languages
