Program Description:
Through the four-year HortiMAP project funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Technoserve and partners WUR, BID Capital and PUM will transform the horticulture industry in Uganda. The program combines catalytic funding through a Market Development Facility and Technical Assistance fund to leverage private sector and local resources and expertise to strengthen SMEs and local supply chains, while delivering world-class Technical/agronomy training to farmers; and entrepreneurship training to farmers and retailers to realize their potential. These interventions are expected to increase incomes for more than 31,000 horticulture farmers, create 12,000 jobs, and improve access to healthy, safe food for 270,000 Ugandan consumers.
This position is part of the Horticultural Value Chain Development Team which works to oversee and deliver high quality technical assistance and Infrastructure facility grants to MDF clients, enterprises within their supply chain, and farmers. The Agriculture Engineer trainee will work closely with associate agronomy advisors, business advisors, Business Counsellors, participants, local stakeholders, and partners. S/he will be responsible for supporting the delivery of infrastructure facility support to Smallholder famers (SHF) and Entrepreneurial Farmers (EF), Producer organization, farmer groups, vendors and SMEs.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Support the market cost/price assessment of the different infrastructure facilities required by the clients; these include irrigation facilities, greenhouses, hydroponics, ambient stores, commercial nursery set ups, cottage processing facilities etc.
To ensure the facilities provided are as the specifications indicated during the prequalification and appropriate to clients
To lead the co-design of tailored infrastructures such as Fresh fruits and vegetable display shelves, transportation compartment of the tri-cycle etc
Oversee the Architectural design of the ambient store including construction/material costing particularly for onions stores, and other infrastructure designs that may be required
Planning of activities to ensure deliverables are met
Periodic reporting of the situation on the ground to provide both data and anecdotal evidence of impact

Deliverables:
• Design and construction/material costing (BOQ) for ambient stores • Design and costing for tri-cycle produce compartment fabrication and fittings
• Over installation of about at least 50 infrastructure facilities
• Design and costing of different tailored Fresh fruits and vegetable display shelves for vendors based on the market space types
• Monthly workplan and reports submitted by 28th of every month to the business advisor
• Support 3 farmer groups and 2 enterpreneurial farmers supported with infrastructure grant application
• Perform any other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Required Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications.
• A degree in Agriculture engineering .
• Graduated in 2019, 2020 or 2021, and has never been formally employed
• Deep Knowledge in farm structures and Irrigation facilities
• Understanding post-harvest Infrastructure and requirement for fresh fruits and vegetables and related products
• Good computer skills (Excel and MS word)
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
