Organisation Description:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC has been working in Uganda since 1998 supporting nationals and refugees and various institutions in the country notably the government, community-based organizations, the civil society and the private sector. The current program portfolio in Uganda includes health, peace building, gender-based violence, economic recovery and agribusiness, and children & youth. IRC has a country office in Kampala, and field offices in Moroto, Kiryandongo, Kyaka II, Yumbe, Imvepi, Kiryandongo and Moroto
IMPACT challenge is an annual IRC competition of creative ideas selected and awarded a small grant to complete within a period of one month. Five ideas won the competition this year. Among them was creation of newborn baby kits (La’tin Kere kits) containing locally woven warm baby clothes aimed at fighting sickness and death resulting from hypothermia (low body temperature) among newborns especially pre-matures. This project is expected to be implemented by the month of September and it involves empowering WPE women groups already involved in knitting activities (train them) to improve their skills to weave baby items including head gears/caps, stockings, towel (or baby cloth) and hand gears which will be packed and distributed to settlement facilities i.e. Paluda H/C III, Awich H/C II and Akworo H/C II.

Five (5) young girls and five young (5) boys will be identified IC Project team and the consultant will train them on soap making and making of reusable sanitary pads. These groups will further be integrat-ed into existing IRC Sexual Reproductive Health programs to carry out sensitization on menstrual hygiene and sexual reproductive health.

• The trainers shall therefore train the selected beneficiaries on soap making and re-usable sanitary pads and then conduct subsequent follow-ups for a period of 10 days.
• Selected beneficiaries are equipped with the knowledge and skills on soap making and re-usable sanitary pads.
• A detailed training report will be submitted to IRC office before processing the final payment of consultants’ allowance.
