About Us

CEED Uganda is a not-for-profit organization, working in partnership with CEED Concordia in Canada to empower young people to become positive change agents in their communities. Youth are drivers of positive social change; they have the power to drive economic growth, shape resilient communities and build strong relationships within communities. We are dedicated to social justice and community empowerment by leveraging the abundant potentials of youth to shape better communities. We are able to do all that we do, with the generous contributions from the students of Concordia University.

The Vision that enables us to do our work is based on our positive attitude towards young people; “We see youth as change agents in their communities.” Our Mission for the youth is to foster community engagement through skills development and information sharing.

Why we do what we do?

  1. Uganda has the world’s largest percentage of young people under 30 years of age– 78% – according to the to the 2012 State of Uganda population report by the UN Population Fund. Worldwide, there are about 1.2 billion 15 to 24 year-olds. About 200 million are in Africa.
  2. Youth unemployment in Uganda is the highest in Africa. Lost Opportunity? Gaps in youth policy and programming in Uganda, published by Action Aid, put youth unemployment at 62%, although the African Development Bank says it could be as high as 83%.
  3. In Uganda, the rapid population growth in the urban areas has greatly outpaced the ability of the urban authorities to provide adequate housing, roads, water supplies, sewers and collection of solid waste. Although the environmental problems associated with garbage do not disappear with collection, uncollected garbage exacerbates many of the environmental hazards associated with urban centres. Such hazards include fire, pests and disease vectors which create human health problems. Uncontrolled disposal by burning and dumping adds to atmospheric and hydrologic pollution loads, clogs waterways and increases the danger of flooding, which has been experienced in some parts of the country.
