Communication Officer at South Sudanese Refugees Association

The South Sudanese Refugee Association (SSURA) is a registered non-profit, community-based, refugee-led organization incorporated as a company by guarantee by the Uganda Registration Service Bureau (Reg. #80020002855962). Operating in Arua, Koboko, and Yumbe, SSURA was founded in September 2016 in Koboko, Uganda. The organization focuses on:

  • Protecting and promoting psychosocial wellbeing.
  • Preventing mental health disorders.
  • Promoting reconciliation and peaceful co-existence among refugees and host communities.
  • Creating economic activities for self-reliance.
  • Advocating for legal protection issues for registered refugees in urban areas and settlements.

About the Job

SSURA is seeking a Communication Officer to support internal and external communication efforts. The role involves developing content, documenting project activities, and promoting the organization’s work through various media platforms. The goal is to enhance visibility, ensure consistent messaging, and strengthen engagement with stakeholders, partners, and the community.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Develop and implement communication plans – Design strategies aligned with SSURA’s mission to enhance visibility and stakeholder engagement.
  2. Document field activities and success stories – Capture impactful stories, testimonials, and project highlights.
  3. Manage SSURA’s social media platforms – Create engaging posts and grow online presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  4. Coordinate media relations and coverage – Build partnerships with media houses and organize press briefings.
  5. Design and produce visibility materials – Develop brochures, banners, flyers, and branded materials.
  6. Support donor communication and visibility – Ensure donor guidelines are met in all communication outputs.
  7. Draft press releases and newsletters – Write timely updates for stakeholders and partners.
  8. Capture and archive photos and videos – Take high-quality media during field visits and events.
  9. Support internal communication – Facilitate information flow within departments.
  10. Promote SSURA’s advocacy messages – Craft messages to raise awareness about refugee issues.
  11. Monitor communication effectiveness – Track engagement and recommend improvements.
  12. Update SSURA’s website content – Keep the website current with new stories and announcements.
  13. Plan and cover organizational events – Ensure events are well-publicized and documented.
  14. Ensure brand and message consistency – Uphold branding guidelines across all materials.
  15. Build community engagement tools – Develop IEC tools to educate and engage beneficiaries.
  16. Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Job Holder Entry Requirements

Knowledge (Education and Related Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communication, or a related field.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in a communication role, preferably in an NGO or humanitarian organization.
  • Prior field and/or media experience is highly desirable.

Skills (Special Training or Competences):

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Content creation and storytelling.
  • Photography and videography (basic to intermediate).
  • Social media management (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Graphic design basics (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Media relations (press releases, media coverage).
  • Digital communication (email marketing, website management).
  • Attention to detail (proofreading, branding consistency).
