Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the evolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.
The Unit’s head offices are located at the Uganda Virus Research Institute- Entebbe Campus, and the main research activities in Masaka, Kalungu, Kampala and Wakiso districts, including the peri-urban areas of Entebbe. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:

Description:
The MRC/UVRI Research Unit on AIDS has recently established a portfolio to undertake important, relevant and impactful non-communicable disease (NCD) research.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, clinical, epidemiological, social- behavioral, and intervention research, this new work seek to provide evidence on burden, disease mechanisms, prevention and optimal care of common NCDs (such as diabetes, hypertension/ cardiovascular disease and lung disorders) in Uganda (and beyond).
As part of this new research theme, we have a PhD studentship available to conduct research on the characteristics (phenotype) of diabetes. The research project will last for 4 years. The studentship will cover appropriate University fees and a stipend.
Person Specification:
The applicant should be a highly motivated individual of Ugandan nationality. He/she should have a Master's degree in a relevant field or medically qualified, with excellent educational and academic record. Experience of research in an academic environment will be considered a major advantage.
