11 Days Rwenzori Trekking Uganda

Destination: Uganda

Introduction:

The Rwenzori Mountains are the biggest mountain range in Africa, including six main mountains with peaks exceeding 4.500 m. of altitude: Mt. Stanley, Mt. Speke, Mt. Baker, Mt. Gessi (in the Congolese side), Mt. Emin Pasha. Mt. Luigi di Savoia. They are found along the border between Uganda and Congo for over 120 km and they are UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highest peak is Margherita, 5.109 m. on Mt. Stanley. It is named after the Italian Queen Margherita, who sponsored the first climbing expedition of the Rwenzori in June 1906, led by Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy the Duke of Abruzzi. The name “Rwenzori” in the local language means “mountain of the rain”, for its rainy nature.

The Rwenzori trekking.

We offer the opportunity to experience the Rwenzori Mountains in its vegetation zones and rich biodiversity for both unexperienced trekkers and expert trekkers. We follow the most scenic and organized route currently available, which is the Kilembe Trail, inaugurated in 2009, giving the chance to climb all the main peaks or spending quality time in some of the most beautiful areas of the Rwenzori, thanks to the presence of mountaineering Huts or camps.

In particular, we offer a shorter circuit of 3 days 2 nights covering 24 km of forest cover and some lobelia garden to maximum of 3174 m altitude at Samalia Camp.

Another option is the 5 days 4-night trekking covering 40 km loop to Weiseman Peak (4.620 m). Both these short options can be considered as possible extensions to other programs in Uganda.

The full circuit to Margherita Peak is an 8 days 7 nights trekking, totaling 11 days’ package starting and ending at Entebbe International Airport.

The best period to climb the Rwenzori.

It is clear to all that the climatic seasons are changing characteristics in recent years, however it is still advisable to climb the Rwenzori especially during the dry seasons, between December and March, between June and July, between September and October.

Are you ready for the climbing?

The trekking and climbing of the Rwenzori, though technically not difficult for any trekker or alpinist in the lower stages, however has its great challenges. The trail is long and tiresome as it lasts up to 8 days to make it to the peak. It requires endurance and physical fitness, at least some previous training.

The final ascent to the Margherita Peak presents a glacier area and requires some technical equipment and knowledge like the use of rope and crampons and use of ice axe (with ice sections of 60% steepness due to climatic changes in the glacier). The guides will help you acquire some experience as you climb up especially using crampons, ropes, harnesses, figure 8 and carabiners.

For the full list of the required equipment, please see the technical check list and the detailed technical sheet.

Trekking options:

OPTION 1: Margherita Peak full circuit package 11 days 10 nights

OPTION 2: Rwenzori Extension To Weismanns Peak 5 Days 4 nights

OPTION 3: Rwenzori Extension To Kalamala Camp and Samalia Camp 3 Days 2 nights

NOTE: EXTENSIONS

After the Option 1 of the full circuit we also propose 2 possible extensions: to Bwindi National Park or to Queen Elizabeth National Park (see details at the end of the document)."

Destination: Uganda

There is no debate about the best birding destination in Africa. Uganda has registered a remarkable increasing population of avian species exceeding 1,008 recorded including residents, endemics and visiting members. Twitchers and upcoming bird lovers, look no further than Uganda as your next destination owing to the fact that existing variety of habitats as rich savannas, vast wetlands, arid and semi-dessert destinations, volcanoes and an Afro-alpine zone attract huge bird biodiversity around the remarkable Pearl of Africa. 7 Days Mount Elgon Trekking

Destination: Uganda

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano with the largest surface area in the world (50 km by 80km) and a caldera which covers over 40km at the top of the mountain. The highest peak is Wagagai, 4.321 m. It lies at the border with Kenya in Eastern Uganda and is protected within the Mount Elgon National Park boundaries shared with Kenya. It is home to the Bagisu and the Sabiny people and the area is well known for the high cultivation of good Arabic coffee. While ascending the peaks, you meet four different vegetation zones: the montane forest, the bamboo forest, the heath zone and moorland zone, where you can find some endemic species of plants like giant Lobelia Elgonensis, particular groundsels and everlasting flowers. At the moment there are not huts available in the mountains, but nice designated camping sites.

The trekking

There are several trekking trails around Mount Elgon. The full trekking circuit to the peaks takes 4 to 5 days to complete, following Sipi or Sasa Trails. From Kapkway Exploration Centre (UWA quarter) you can take at least three different one - day hikes, the Chebanet Falls, Mountain Bamboo trail and Ridge view trail. The one day trail to see the four Sipi Falls is a popular activity and it starts from the village of Sipi.

Period for the trekking

The best time to visit Mount Elgon is May and September, November and December. Are you ready for the trekking? This trekking does not require any technical equipment and it is considered an easy activity. Physical fitness and training however is recommended before undertaking the adventure. It is unlikely to experience altitude sickness in Mount Elgon. You will enjoy the peace and the stunning panoramic views from the summit and the caldera. Itinerary: Sipi Trail down Sasa Trail 7 days 6 nights This is the most recommended trail. It is gradual in terms of difficulty and it reaches the best places and view point from the mountain."

6 Days Nyiragongo volcano & Virunga gorilla trekking

Destination: Congo

Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a world heritage site which is made by four main sectors, the Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes; the Mikeno sector of the Virunga Volcanoes Mountains; the Lulimbi savannah along Lake Edward; and the Rwenzori Mountains.

You will visit the Mikeno sector, named after one of the Virunga volcanoes, a mountaineering area where today there are 8 gorilla groups open for tourism activity, making up a total of 120 gorillas (of a total population in Virunga of about 480). These 8 groups are found in four trekking points, which are: Bukima, Kibumba, Katovu and Jomba. The Mikeno sector of the park enjoys stunning view over the Albertine Rift Valley, which comes from Uganda and proceeds down to Lake Kivu. The roads along the park are currently very dirt and the transportation is made with good land rovers.

Nyiragongo Volcano

Nyiragongo is an active volcano, with a biggest lava dam in the world, visible from its edge at an altitude of 3.470 meters. With the Nyamulagira volcano, they are the last of the Virunga volcanoes, located near the Lake Kivu and overlooking Goma Town, making the area to be separated from the Mikeno sector of the park. Nyiragongo erupted last time in January 2002. The volcano can be climbed in a 2 days trekking with an overnight on top along the edge, where a number of wooden cabins are available as dormitories, plus the common latrines and kitchen area where the cooks of the organization prepare hot meals for the tourists. The trekking follows the vegetation of the mountain and you will have four stopping points with available latrine along the way.

Organization of the trekking of the Nyiragongo

Climbing the Nyiragongo is not a difficult activity and it can take about 5 to 6 hours to reach on top. You will need your trekking gear including: rucksack, sleeping bag (the mattress is provided in the cabins), torch, light and worm rain jacket, warm hat, trekking boots, rain gear for your own protection (rain is a bit frequent in this area). You will carry with you a full change of clothes in case of having found the rain on the way (socks, t-shirts, trousers, shirt and sweater). At night the temperature goes down to minus zero degrees, so it is advisable to have layers of clothes to spend the night on the edge and for sleeping.

The park will give you as part of the service: rucksack, sleeping bag, poncho, warm jacket. You might go with it or prefer your own personal gear.

Chimpanzees as well as humans share over 98 percent of their DNA.

However these being wild animals, chances of spotting these chimps are not always guaranteed although they are over 95% within the Kibale Forest, hence making it the most perfect destination in the whole of East Africa for chimpanzee tracking.

It is in addition probable to take part in the fascinating habituation experience, meaning that you can actuallty get a chance to spend the entire day with this impressive creatures.

However, because the number of chimpanzee trekking permits for each day is restricted, you are greatly advised to book in advance to your safari date.

Normally lunch boxes may be offered to the trekkers that are taking part in the habituation process sinc it requires the entire day.

Important to Note is that 15 years is the minimum age allowed to take part in the chimpanzee tracking experience.

What to carry along

Wear shoes that have a good grip, suitable for climbing steep moist muddy slopes

A number of people actually feel more at ease when wearing clothes that are long sleeved as this will protect them from the pricking thickets as they move through the verdant jungle

Do not forget a rain gear, since the weather here is highly unpredictable

Bring enough drinking water plus snacks to bite on

Carry a pair of binoculars

If taking photos, keep in mind that your subjects are actually black animals living within dim light, so camera flashes is strictly not permitted. Better to have a fast film (of 400 – 800 ASA) or even utilize the settings on your camera.

They are Sociable, intelligent as well as communicative and among their very fascinating traits is the ability to utilize tools like rocks for crushing nuts, empty pods for hollowing out water plus sticks for capturing termites from their holes. These skills are for long been passed on from generation to another and researchers say that different troops have specialist tasks, basing on their habitat as well as diet.

Chimps stay in groups of 10 – 100 members. They can babysit each other’s young, kiss, groom one another and even hold hands. The young chimps become independent at the age of 4 year. Nonetheless, chimps can be aggressive and unsociable, mainly if disturbed.
