Job Overview
Objective
To ensure timely, accurate, and compliant preparation, declaration, filing, payment, and reconciliation of all statutory tax obligations while supporting financial reporting and customs-related tax compliance.
Key Responsibility:
- Support customs tax declarations and ensure compliance with import and export tax requirements applicable to Inland Container Depot operations.
- Review supplier invoices, customer transactions, and accounting entries to ensure correct application of applicable taxes.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and provide guidance on their implications to ensure continued statutory compliance.
- Prepare tax schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
- Assist in month-end and year-end financial closing by ensuring all tax-related transactions are accurately recorded.
- Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, internal controls, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure confidentiality, integrity, and security of all financial and tax information.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Finance Manager in line with departmental objectives
Authority & Independence
The Account Assistant has full authority delegated by the Finance Manager as per the requirements, duties and responsibility of the job
Work Conditions
- Primarily office-based with regular interaction with regulatory authorities.
- Occasional travel to URA offices, customs, banks, and other government institutions.
- May be required to work extended hours during month-end, year-end, audit periods, and statutory filing deadlines.
- Prolonged use of computers is required.
Physical & Mental Fitness
- Physically and mentally fit.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- High level of concentration and analytical capability.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive financial information.
Education Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration or related business courses. 3 years’ experience in similar role
Skills & Competences
- Sound knowledge of Ugandan tax legislation and statutory compliance requirements.
- Strong understanding of financial accounting principles and tax accounting.
- Knowledge of customs procedures and import/export taxation.
- Financial reporting and account reconciliation.
- ERP and computerized accounting systems.
- Effective written communication skills
- High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

- Prepare, review, and submit all statutory tax returns, including Value Added Tax (VAT), Withholding Tax (WHT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Corporation Tax, Stamp Duty, and any other applicable taxes within the statutory deadlines.
- Prepare tax payment schedules and ensure timely settlement of all tax liabilities to avoid penalties and interest.
- Perform monthly reconciliation of all tax accounts against the general ledger and investigate and resolve any discrepancies.
- Ensure all accounting transactions are accurately captured and comply with applicable tax legislation and internal financial policies.
- Maintain complete and accurate tax records, including tax returns, payment receipts, invoices, customs documentation, tax assessments, and statutory correspondence.
- Liaise with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), customs authorities, auditors, and other regulatory agencies on tax compliance matters, audits, assessments, and queries.
