Position Summary
The Agriculture Extension Assistant will support the Sustainable Models for Agricultural and Renewable Technologies (SMART) Centre Project in Lobule, in Koboko District, West Nile, Northern Uganda. The role focuses on promoting climate-smart agriculture, improving food security, and strengthening self-reliance among refugees and host communities. The Assistant will support farmer training, demonstration plots, community outreach, and capacity building, contributing to a technology learning hub that enhances resilience to climate change and promotes peaceful co-existence.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- Possess at least a minimum of Diploma in Agriculture or related field or its equivalent.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Able to work long hours with minimum or no supervision.
- Ability to train others on farm practices with good facilitation skills.
- Fluency in at least a local language within the Koboko District eg Kakwa, Arabic, Swahili & Lingala in the priority order.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing project needs and work in challenging field conditions.
- Strong commitment to working with and empowering local communities.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse cultural setting and respect local traditions and practices.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and in a field office setting.
Experience needed
- Previous experience in Market systems and sustainable Agricultural Livelihood related interventions.
- Good practical experience in rain fed horticultural/vegetable production.

- Encourage farmers to adopt new agricultural technologies through experiential learning using the farmer-field school approach.
- Support implementation of climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices under the SMART Centre Project.
- Establish and manage demonstration plots for crops, agroecology, and renewable technologies.
- Train and mentor farmers, refugees, and host community members using participatory extension approaches.
- Mobilize communities and promote inclusive participation of women and youth.
- Provide on-farm advisory services to improve productivity, food security, and livelihoods.
- Support data collection, documentation of best practices, and reporting of project activities.
- Promote peaceful co-existence and collaboration between refugee and host communities.
- Actively participate in monitoring project implementation and routine data collection at household level.
- Support farmer groups to manage kitchen gardens, nursery beds, and other agricultural production activities.
- Support the Agronomist and Extension Officer in keeping track of the beneficiaries’ records throughout the project duration.
- Identify plant pests, diseases and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides, fungicides and other related agronomic practices.
- Support farmers in the establishment and general maintenance of demonstration gardens.
- Support the Agronomist and Extension Officer in monitoring the construction works if needed at the SMART Center.
- Ensure the market systems strengthening and economic empowerment initiatives are designed and implemented in a gender- responsive manner.
- Supervise, mentor and support farmer groups in financial literacy practices
- Ensure effective operations of VSLA activities in supported farmer groups
- Monitor and report on implementation and achievement of joint household plans.
- Ensure collection of financial data from VSLA groups on a monthly basis.
- Prepare groups for action audit / share out. Any and all other duties as assigned from time to time by the line supervisor.
