CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit (PNFP) Christian Hospital specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Integrated Spiritual Ministry, is seeking an experienced Individual for the Full-Time position of an Anesthetic Assistant.

Position Title : Anesthesia Assistant.

Reports to : Anesthesia & Critical Care Supervisor / Anesthesiologist

Supervises : None

Duty Station : CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda

Department : Anesthesiology

Location : Mbale, Uganda

Duration : Fixed Term - Renewable

Position Overview:

To support safe, efficient, and compassionate anesthesia services by preparing equipment, managing supplies, assisting during procedures, and maintaining compliance with health and safety standards.

Key Result Area and Activities

Anesthesia Setup and Support

  • Prepare and clean anesthesia equipment tailored to each case (age, weight, procedure).
  • Assist anesthesia provider during induction and emergence phases.
  • Support daily OR routines as directed by anesthesia provider or Operating Room In-Charge.
  • Help transfer patients post-procedure when needed.

Stock Management and Documentation

  • Restock anesthesia cart and store daily.
  • Monitor usage and reorder anesthesia supplies promptly.
  • Maintain orderly storage with clear shelf labels.
  • Enter stock summaries into anesthesia data forms and Operating Room stock cards.

Gas Cylinder Handling and Reordering

  • Safely handle Oxygen, Medical Air, Nitrous Oxide, and Nitrogen cylinders.
  • Reorder medical gases in a timely manner.
  • Report any issues with gas supply or equipment to the anesthesia supervisor.

Equipment Maintenance and Safety

  • Inspect anesthesia machines and accessories for damage.
  • Clean and disinfect machines and accessories daily.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Monitor and record temperature and humidity in the anesthesia drug store.
  • Notify supervisor of any environmental control issues.

Health, Safety, and Infection Control

  • Comply with hospital health and safety policies, including safe handling of instruments and disposal of sharps.
  • Use PPE appropriately and maintain correct uniform standards.
  • Identify and report hazards or incidents promptly.
  • Participate in workplace safety and well-being initiatives.

Professional Conduct and Confidentiality

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and share data only with authorized personnel.
  • Communicate effectively across disciplines to support patient care.
  • Demonstrate respect for all patients regardless of background or condition.

Spiritual Ministry Engagement

  • Participate in devotional time before surgery.
  • Attend chapel and departmental Bible studies as scheduled.
  • Exhibit a Christ-like attitude toward patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Foster positive relationships and teamwork.

Attendance and Participation

  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Attend departmental and general staff meetings regularly.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Show initiative in learning new skills and concepts.
  • Actively participate in CPD activities relevant to anesthesia support and perioperative care.
  • Attend internal and external training sessions, workshops, or seminars as scheduled.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of anesthesia equipment, safety protocols, and emerging best practices.
  • Document CPD activities and share learnings with the team to promote continuous improvement.

  • Perform any other official duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Must be registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council
  • Ability to handle or process confidential documents or material in an appropriate manner
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently
  • Computer literacy an added advantage
  • At least one-year experience as anesthetic assistant or demonstrated ability and desire to learn and embrace new ideas.
