The position

Job description

The Country Sustainability Manager will lead the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives across our operations in Uganda. This role involves overseeing branch operations, managing budgets, engaging with donors and clients, approving expenses, promoting the adoption of mobile financial solutions, developing certification programs in each branch—including Rainforest Alliance (RFA), Organic (ORG), and Touton’s own PACT certifications—overviewing traceability of sourced commodities, managing internal audits and ensuring successful external audits. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of sustainability practices, strong project management skills, and the ability to drive change within a dynamic environment.

Key responsabilities :

  • Branch Supervision :
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of regional branches, ensuring alignment with the company’s sustainability objectives.​
    • Manage and supervise branch activities to maintain consistency and ensure targets are reached across all locations.​
    • Manage a team of sustainability officers, agronomists and other staff involved in our sustainability activities
  • Budget Management :
    • Manage budget reconciliation processes with donors and internal funding sources, ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of funds.​
    • Reporting donor funding timely and accurately to Touton Headquarters.
    • Proactively formulate action plans in case of over or under spends.
    • Establishment of presentation of expenses versus budget to local and group management
    • In charge of monthly reconciliation to be shared with local management for review and approval
  • Expense Approval :
    • Review and approve expenditures related to sustainability projects and branches operations, ensuring compliance with financial policies and budgetary constraints.​
  • Mobile Financial Solutions Development :
    • Promote and oversee the adoption of mobile financial services, such as Mobile Money (MoMo), to enhance financial transactions within the organization. This includes facilitating payments, managing cash flows, and ensuring secure and efficient financial operations. ​
  • Certification Program Development:
    • Rainforest Alliance (RFA): Ensure agricultural products meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.
    • Organic (ORG): Certify products that comply with organic farming practices, avoiding synthetic chemicals.
    • Pact: Implement relevant certification programs to enhance operational standards and community engagement
  • Traceability Management :
    • Ensure conformity of traceability for coffee, vanilla, and other commodities sourced by the company, maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain. ​
  • Audit Management :
    • Oversee internal and external audits conducted by the company or third parties, ensuring compliance with sustainability standards and continuous improvement in processes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement :
    • Coordinate and lead donor and client visits, showcasing the company’s sustainability initiatives and fostering strong relationships.​
    • Prepare and deliver group and local presentations to communicate and reconcile sustainability activities with stakeholders.​
  • Strategic Planning :
    • Develop and execute comprehensive sustainability strategies aligned with the company’s mission and regional objectives.​
  • Program Management :
    • Oversee sustainability programs, ensuring effective implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of environmental and social initiatives.​
  • Compliance and Reporting :
    • Ensure adherence to local, national, and international environmental regulations.​
    • Prepare detailed reports on sustainability performance and progress toward established goals.​
  • Education and Advocacy :
    • Lead initiatives to raise awareness and educate employees and the community on sustainability practices and environmental responsibility.​
  • Grant Management :
    • Pursue and manage grants to support sustainability projects, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and effective utilization of resources.​

 

Preferred experience

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Master’s degree is preferred.​
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of five years of experience managing sustainability programs, with at least two years in a supervisory or administrative role.​
    • Proven experience in branch supervision, budget reconciliation, expense approval, stakeholder engagement, certification program development, traceability management, and audit processes.
    • Familiarity with mobile financial services, particularly Mobile Money (MoMo), and their application in organizational finance.​
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability best practices.​
    • Excellent project management and organizational skills.​
    • Ability to analyse data and generate actionable insights.​
    • Proficient in stakeholder engagement and public speaking.​
    • Experience in grant writing and management.​
    • Financial acumen, particularly in budgeting and expense management.​
