IDU (International Distillers Uganda)

Established in 1962, IDU – International Distillers Uganda, is owned by East African Breweries Limited. Its core business is the manufacture, marketing and sales of spirit-based alcoholic beverages. It also imports and distributes premium spirit brands from the parent company. The local brands, which are produced and marketed in Uganda are: Smirnoff, Gilbeys, Uganda Waragi, V&A, Captain Morgan Gold and Bond 7 amongst others. Other international corporate brands which the company imports and distributes include Bailey’s, Johnnie Walker, Gordon’s, J&B, Captain Morgan, Ciroc, Tanqueray, Singleton, Talisker, Lagavulin amongst others

UBL has been a leading brewer in Uganda since it began operations in 1946. Located in Port Bell – Luzira in the outskirts of Kampala, the brewery is continuously modernized and its operating capacity expanded. The plant has a total brewing capacity of 1.65m hectolitres per year. Bell Lager is the company's flagship brand having been in the market for over 60 years. Other key Brands include: Guinness, Tusker Malt, Pilsner, Tusker Lite and Ready to Serve drinks.

Market Complexity

East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), one of the largest companies in East Africa, has extensive operations in Uganda through its subsidiary, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), which produces, markets and sells alcoholic and non-alcoholic Uganda.

UBL operates in a developing, complex, and challenging environment with growing competition in alcohol and substitute consumer goods categories. Legislation is also becoming more restrictive. UBL manages GLR (Rwanda, Burundi, EDRC) and thus need to have an external Lense to those markets.

The role reports functionally to the Commercial Finance and Revenue Growth Manager and operates as a supportive advisor to the Commercial/sales function. It provides comprehensive financial reviews of all Commercial and distributor initiatives and activities to maintain spending efficiency and accurate controls.

Within a small group, there is a high degree of self-sufficiency required in the role with direct accountability to help deliver initiatives for various collaborators.

Purpose of Role

To act as a meaningful business partner to the commercial function (Divisional/Regional Sales Managers and Commercial Director) for UBL and the Great Lakes business (Rwanda, Burundi, EDRC). The role holder provides financial and commercial input to investment decisions, driving analytical work on pricing that transforms revenue management and creates sustainable value for the business, distributors, and retailers. As part of a small team, this role requires high self-sufficiency and direct accountability for delivering commercial initiatives

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Engage Managers and Senior Managers to ensure financial implications are fully understood in decision-making.
  • Create rich partnerships with commercial teams through engagement and support with financial requests
  • Manage growth, engagement, and performance reviews of direct reports, shaping high performance through coaching and commercial acumen.
  • Support the Finance Director and Head of Commercial Finance with ad-hoc analysis.

Role Responsibilities

Strategic Pricing & Revenue Growth Management

  • Own the development and rollout of financial processes focused on excellence in pricing strategy, discipline, and optimization.
  • Provide thought leadership and pricing expertise to build and run next-generation revenue management analytics and tools.
  • Develop a deep understanding of customer segments and channel management to initiate and implement channel commercial policies.
  • Create and own value chains for beer and spirits, ensuring price proposals align with business strategy

Financial Evaluation & Performance Tracking

  • Provide financial scenarios and recommendations based on volume sensitivities and external considerations.
  • Conduct pre- and post-investment appraisals of the effectiveness of Sales drivers and marketing/customer initiatives.
  • Generate and submit the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) with a focus on volumes and Net Sales Value (NSV).
  • Provide insights on financial performance and track customer profitability for Monthly Business Reviews (MBRs)

Data Analytics & Insights

  • Support data-driven decisions by providing impactful analytics and visualizing insights derived from business data.
  • Analyse complex data and channel trends to identify opportunities and drive data automation and visibility.
  • Effectively communicate analytics findings to stakeholders through digestible documentation and presentations

Controls & Execution

  • Drive the execution of business strategy developed in MBPs and special commercial projects.
  • Maintain strict controls and monitoring of spend to ensure full compliance with the Statement of Authority (SOA) and commercial finance policies.
  • Review and approve business cases with implications on price or topline strategy.

Qualifications and Experience Required:

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a finance related discipline
  • Qualified accountant (either professionally qualified or qualified by experience)
  • MBA is an added advantage

Experience

  • Over 5 years’ experience in an FMCG environment in a similar role
