Overview
The Driver will provide logistical/transport/office support for the Jhpiego office. This includes maintaining office vehicle(s), ensuring that the vehicle policies are adhered to, driving and assisting with other office duties. The Driver will maintain vehicle mileage and related records as required by Jhpiego policies. The Driver is expected to be flexible and work longer than office hours when in the field and departing/arriving from the field. Also, when not in the field the Driver is expected to report to work early to assist with other office duties. This is a short term position that is required for a period of 3 months.
Responsibilities
- Drives Jhpiego office vehicle on official trips as necessary.
- Deliver project equipment, supplies, and documents to designated locations within set timelines.
- Always Ensure that ALL passengers wear seat belts. Top priority must be given to the safety of all passengers in the vehicle whether they are staff, consultants or colleagues. The Driver will also ensure early departure to/from the field to ensure that the car is not driven after dark. The Driver has the authority to refuse travel if he/she feels that they will not be able to reach their destination before dark. In this case, the Driver/Office Assistant will inform the Administrative Officer or Finance Manager of this decision.
- The Driver must always enforce Jhpiego’s vehicle policies and has the authority to refuse to drive in case in case he/she is being asked to deviate from Jhpiego vehicle policies.
- The Driver will ensure that he/she always has a valid driver’s license and must be fully aware and cognizant of the existing and new Uganda driving rules and regulations. The Driver must never violate any traffic regulations.
- The Driver will ensure that any office vehicle he drives meets legal requirements e.g. insurance.
- Ensure that the office vehicle has the necessary equipment like spare tires, lifesavers, toolbox, first aid kit, etc. and is always kept clean.
- He/she should maintain the motor vehicle logs and monitor fuel consumption, mileage and other minor vehicle maintenance issues.
- Assist in packing training materials for field travel and while in the field, he/she will assist the Jhpiego team with other tasks.
- Inform the Administration Officer in good time when service (minor/major) is due for vehicles, and of any other repairs required for vehicles. He/she should also inform the Administrative Officer when the vehicle is almost due for insurance renewal.
- Do office errands either using the office vehicle or by public transport as need arises.
- Assist with office functions like making photocopies of documents and binding, packing training materials for distribution when the need arises.
- Assist the Office Assistant when necessary: Answer the telephone, forwards calls, provide phone assistance for outgoing calls ensuring messages are taken clearly and accurately. Receive visitors and direct them as necessary.
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum O-level education
- Valid Ugandan Driver’s License with classes B, CM, and DL.
- Minimum four years' experience in driving in Uganda, experience driving long distances on up-country routes is an added advantage.
- Certificate in Defensive Driving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum five years driving experience in a busy office
- Experience in long distance driving/travel
- Knowledge of Ugandan traffic laws, new regulations, and upcountry routes
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance, trouble shooting is required
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Luganda.
- A broad variety of driving and vehicle maintenance skills
- Be self-motivated, proactive and have a positive attitude to work requiring minimum supervision.
- Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle a variety of assignments sometimes under pressure of deadlines.
- Be cooperative, hardworking, flexible & dependable.
- Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence.
- Pleasant, warm and outgoing personality.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Be of high integrity and have a sense of confidentiality
- Be willing to take on extra responsibilities to achieve the goals/objectives set by the organization
