The African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit making NGO with a presence in Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. AIRD’s mission is to enable the compassionate movement of those displaced by natural or man-made disasters to safety and providing them and their host communities with opportunities to build their lives and thrive for the long term. AIRD provides operational technical support, including but not limited to transport, logistics, rehabilitation of infrastructures, sustainable livelihoods, WASH and environmental sustainability initiatives to promote resilience and empowerment for displaced people and their host communities. in partnership with relief and development organizations that focus on disaster-affected, poverty-infested and development-oriented areas. AIRD delivers for and through partners including but not limited to UN Agencies, international and national donor organizations and governments.
Job summary
Responsible for operating AIRD HQ vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation of staff, goods and materials to and from specified destinations. The Driver must have knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road. This position requires excellent driving record, time management skills, physical body strength and stamina.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day maintenance of vehicles; check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc. and ensure that vehicles are road worthy and maintained up to the established SOPs
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the organisation’s vehicles.
- Plan routes and meet delivery schedules
- Transport authorized passengers and staff, deliver supplies, documents and other items assigned by the Supervisor
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries and vehicle maintenance
- Ensure Logbooks are correctly filled during official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes, greasing & others history are well recorded.
- Ensue that all required documents are available, up to date and valid (logbooks, road licence, insurance, driver’s licence).
- Prepare monthly vehicle usage report and submit timely to the Supervisor
- Ensure strict compliance to AIRD safety and security protocols, policies and emergency procedures
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices
- Attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
- Familiarity with basic vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to lift heavy objects/packages
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Punctual and reliable
- A commitment to professional conduct and ethical behavior
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic Microsoft Office skills – Word and Excel
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in driving and maintaining light vehicles in a humanitarian organization or commercial companies
