OVERVIEW

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The job holder is primarily responsible for driving Save the Children vehicles, transport staff, collect and deliver goods, and documents on Save the Children's business safely and efficiently to their destinations in line with Save the Children's Policy and procedures. The Driver may be called upon as and when necessary to support the emergency team in cases of humanitarian crisis.

THE ROLE 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

As a member of the Team,

  • Drive Save the Children vehicles to collect and deliver people, documents, and goods to their destinations safely and on time, in line with Save the Children's policy and guidelines. 
  • Maintain the vehicle(s) in a clean and sound mechanical condition and ensure their safety at all times in line with Save the Children Policy and guidelines.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is mechanically attended to and is properly checked for oil, water, fan belt tension, brake fluid, levels, etc, before leaving for the trip, including recommendations (to management) for vehicle service in line with Save the Children policy and guidelines.
  • Maintain an up-to-date mileage vehicle log sheet and submit to the supervisor every month in line with Save the Children policy. In addition, submit monthly vehicle log sheets and vehicle Profleet reports in Excel every month.
  • Ensure that the road license and vehicle insurance are valid and renewed on time in line with national traffic regulations and Save the Children policy.
  • ▪ Ensure that the vehicle’s safety and recovery tools and accessories, including the spare wheel, jack, wheel spanner, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, etc., are kept in the vehicle and good condition at all times, per the Save the Children policy.
  • Report any damage/accidents to the vehicle or defects arising at the earliest possible time to the supervisor (Supply chain officer/manager, Fleet Coordinator) as required by policy in line with the traffic regulations and Save the Children policy.
  • Cooperate and be of assistance to staff and visitors – assist in troubleshooting potential problems during daily business.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Save the Children and not to jeopardize its humanitarian mission in the country of operation.
  • Follow travel instructions and observe all traffic regulations/ laws in place, where needed, advise on the possible breach of traffic regulations/ laws in line with Save the Children policy and guidelines.
  • Ability to adhere to the Save the Children Child Protection Code of Conduct, Security Guidelines, Chronic Illness Policy, and ethical Principles.

To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:

  • At least possess a minimum qualification of O level with Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) certificate.
  • Possess a Certificate in Automotive Mechanics for two years. 
  • At least five years of relevant experience, preferably in an International NGO.
  • Possess a valid driving license.
  • Classes DM, DL, CM, and B licenses held for at least three years.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Good interpersonal relations, planning skills, communication skills, ie, both oral and written.
  • Ready to travel to the field from time to time.
  • Good computer skills in MS Word, Excel.
  • Mechanical Knowledge is required.
  • Have strong work ethics and require minimal direction, work well independently as well as part of a team, thrive in a fast-paced and fun environment, good coordination and collaboration skills.
  • Team player, inclusive and values diversity, willing to work with different people.
  • Excellent relationship-building and customer care skills.
  • Mature with a high sense of responsibility, alert, flexible, courteous, and neat.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and resilient character with the ability to manage expectations.
  • Knowledge of routes, duty stations, and project areas in the NGO and diplomatic community is required.
  • Must know Save the Children vehicle policies and regulations
