Job Summary: The Electrical Technician will support reliable and efficient operation of production equipment by performing preventive and corrective electrical maintenance, troubleshooting faults, and minimizing unplanned downtime. This role is critical, focusing on executing preventive maintenance (PM) across all electrical systems, conducting thorough root cause analysis (RCA) on defective electrical failures, and driving minimal downtime to consistently meet or exceed targeted Overall Equipment Effectiveness metrics.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on all electrical equipment and systems, including scheduled inspections, testing, cleaning, calibration, and lubrication of motors, drives, control panels, sensors, PLCs, HMIs, transformers, switchgear, and instrumentation across production lines.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical faults using multimeters, oscilloscopes, insulation testers, thermal imagers, and PLC programming tools to identify issues in power distribution, motor controls (AC-DC drives up to 1000 hp), variable frequency drives, servo systems, relays, contactors, limit switches, proximity sensors, thermocouples, and pressure transmitters.
  • Execute corrective repairs and replacements on faulty components, including rewiring, panel modifications, motor overhauls, drive parameter tuning, PLC logic adjustments, and HMI screen updates to restore equipment with minimal production interruption.
  • Ensure minimal unplanned downtime through proactive fault detection, rapid emergency response, and systematic root cause analysis (RCA) on recurring electrical failures or defective machines, implementing corrective actions and preventive measures to eliminate root causes and improve reliability.
  • Install, commission, and align new or refurbished electrical equipment, interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals to ensure accurate integration and safe operation.
  • Monitor and analyze electrical system performance indicators during operation, using diagnostic tools to predict failures and support OEE improvement.
  • Support PLC-based automation systems including ladder logic troubleshooting, program backups, minor modifications, and integration with SCADA or plant monitoring systems.
  • Perform electrical safety inspections, lockout-tagout (LOTO) verification, and compliance checks on high-voltage/low-voltage systems, ensuring adherence to Ugandan electrical regulations, OSHA-equivalent standards, and company safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate technical records of all maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, fault findings, RCA outcomes, parts used, and downtime metrics using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Participate in equipment changeovers, setups, and production trials for new profiles, gauges, or coatings, verifying electrical readiness, calibration of controls, and safe start up.
  • Respond to breakdown calls and perform emergency repairs during shifts or on-call rotations, prioritizing safety, rapid recovery, and communication with production teams to meet OEE targets.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Diploma or in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Electricity, or related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least 4+ years of hands-on experience as an Electrical Technician in a heavy industrial manufacturing setting (steel, metal processing)
  • Proven experience working with industrial three-phase systems (400V+), motor controls, VFDs/inverters, PLC-based automation, and control panels in production machinery.
  • Experience on use of SAP or related ERP.
  • Proven experience working on Roofing shifts, cranes, metal coating, transformers, generators.
  • Safety consciousness and commitment —thorough knowledge of electrical hazards (arc flash, shock, LOTO), risk assessment, safe work practices, PPE usage, and incident prevention in high-risk industrial setting.
  • Ability to build a relationship and deal with suppliers
