Background
Dalilang Foods & Beverages is a Ugandan FMCG manufacturer producing packaged snacks, including potato crisps, gonja chips, coated peanuts and peanut butter, alongside spring water, fruit nectars and energy drinks.
Job Description
Performs routine analytical testing to confirm the quality and safety of raw materials, processing conditions, water, ingredients, and finished products. Supports factory quality operations through accurate sample handling, reagent preparation, and laboratory recordkeeping as an entry level analyst.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare work surfaces, glassware, testing instruments, and reagents prior to starting daily analytical procedures.
- Receive and verify incoming samples, ensuring accurate documentation of labels, batch numbers, collection times, and testing requirements to maintain traceability.
- Perform routine quality tests including pH determination, Brix measurement, titration, moisture measurement, acidity tests, and basic water quality checks.
- Prepare chemical reagents in accordance with approved instructions, properly labelling concentration, preparation date, expiration date, and hazard warnings.
- Record all test data into laboratory worksheets or computer systems exactly as observed without altering results, escalating out of specification findings immediately.
- Conduct routine equipment checks and calibration verifications with reference standards, reporting and tagging faulty devices.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, store chemicals based on compatibility, and safely dispose of laboratory waste, expired reagents, and broken glassware.
- Escalate complex analytical procedures, abnormal results, microbiological issues, and unfamiliar testing requirements to senior quality personnel.
Skills
- Practical wet chemistry skills including titration, solution preparation, and precise weighing.
- Proficiency in operating laboratory instruments including pH meters, refractometers, balances, and moisture analyzers.
- Accurate scientific record keeping, mathematical calculations, and basic computer data entry.
- Knowledge of laboratory housekeeping, chemical safety protocols, and personal protective equipment usage.
- Strict adherence to standard operating procedures and testing protocols.
Education Qualifications & Experience
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma, National Diploma, or National Certificate in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Food Technology, Laboratory Technology, Science Technology, Chemical Technology, Biological Sciences, Applied Chemistry, Applied Sciences, or related scientific fields.
- Recognized technical laboratory qualifications, including relevant UBTEB programs.
- UACE with Chemistry and other relevant science subjects for laboratory trainee positions receiving intensive training.
- UCE accompanied by recognized technical training, or considered for laboratory support roles.
Experience
- No prior work experience required.
- A four week onboarding period covers laboratory safety, sample handling, calculation methods, equipment use, record keeping, reagent preparation, and supervised test repetition.
