KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

JOB DESCRIPTION

BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

Objective: Ensure portfolio quality, accurate impairment provisioning, and effective credit risk portfolio monitoring to support the Bank’s financial performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously review the adequacy of loan loss provisions in line with BOU Prudential Guidelines and the IFRS9 impairment model and recommend appropriate provision levels.
  • Maintain a comprehensive provision schedule and undertake quarterly discounting of securities for NPLs.
  • Review account classification and IFRS9 staging and recommend the correct classification.
  • Work with Group Risk Analytics to recalibrate the IFRS9 impairment model annually.
  • Track recoveries and regularly report write-off statistics.
  • Monitor portfolio concentrations against approved limits (obligor, sector, product, cross-border, currency, etc.).
  • Monitor sector concentration limits.
  • Monitor PP limits and PP performance matrices.
  • Monitor compliance with credit-related regulatory ratios.
  • Review NPL portfolios and initiate write-offs, write-backs, and interest write-offs in line with the In Duplum Rule.
  • Ensure provisions and suspended interest are correctly booked at all times.

CUSTOMER CENTRICITY

Objective: Deliver timely and reliable credit portfolio information to internal stakeholders while fostering effective collaboration and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and collaborate with Finance, Operations, Treasury, and Business Units in the preparation of credit-related reports.
  • Follow up with Business Units on IFRS9 staging override memos and facilitate timely approvals.
  • Prepare and provide timely management information and portfolio performance reports to stakeholders.
  • Serve as the key point of contact for portfolio and impairment-related matters during internal and external reviews.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting to support business decision-making and regulatory compliance.

CONTROLS AND PROCESSES

Objective: Maintain strong governance, data integrity, reporting accuracy, and regulatory compliance across portfolio management activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of all regulatory returns, Group returns, and management reports.
  • Review and sign off all credit-related reports prepared by the unit.
  • Prepare Quarterly Board Papers within the prescribed timelines.
  • Prepare Quarterly Portfolio Performance Reports for Credit Risk Management.
  • Prepare the monthly EXCO Credit Risk Dashboard.
  • Review and ensure accurate MIS maintenance in the core banking system, including classification, risk ratings, sector allocation, and IFRS9 staging.
  • Ensure all loan-related GL accounts reconcile at all times.
  • Oversee CRB reporting and ensure regular data clean-up and updating of settled facilities.
  • Provide portfolio reports and information required by external auditors, BOU auditors, and Group auditors.
  • Act as the primary liaison during audits relating to portfolio quality, classification, provisioning, and impairments.

Objective: Drive strategic initiatives, digital transformation, and regulatory projects that strengthen credit risk management capabilities.

  • Lead and oversee the BOU Granular Data Integration Project and ensure seamless operations post-implementation.
  • Act as Project Manager for all automation initiatives within the Credit Risk Management Department.
  • Drive continuous improvement in portfolio reporting, data quality, and regulatory reporting processes.
  • Support enhancements to IFRS9 governance and portfolio analytics capabilities.
  • Champion automation and efficiency initiatives aimed at improving credit risk monitoring and reporting.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

Objective: Build a high-performing team and ensure effective execution of departmental objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach, and develop Portfolio Analysts within the unit.
  • Set performance objectives and conduct periodic performance reviews.
  • Provide technical guidance and quality assurance for reports prepared by team members.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support knowledge sharing and capability building within the Credit Risk Management function.

JOB PROFILE/ REQUIREMENTS

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance.
  • Minimum 5years banking experience, two of which must have been in a credit-related role.
  • Extensive experience in working with MS Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Minimum 2 years in portfolio analytics

Competence Requirements

  • Sound knowledge of Bank of Uganda Prudential Guidelines, IFRS9, Financial Institutions Act;
  • Understanding of credit risk and general trends in the banking sector;
  • Technical skills to effectively perform the credit administration activities/tasks in a manner that consistently produce high quality of service.
  • Knowledge and effective application of all relevant banking policies, processes, procedures and guidance to consistently achieve required compliance standards or benchmarks.
  • Self-empowerment to enable development of open communication, teamwork and trust that are needed to support performance and customer-service oriented culture.
  • Initiative and decision-making techniques aimed at resolving and proposing solutions to the various challenges in Credit administration.
  • People managements skills and ability to work across functions.
