Managing Director

Kampala, Uganda

Responsibilities

The role of Managing Director primary accountabilities include:

a. General Management

  • Leading strategic change initiatives; identification and support of change programmes and being a champion of change
  • Take personal ownership and accountability of P&L delivery including budget preparation, and acheivement
  • Assessment of the effectiveness of management operating systems and procedures and initiation and/or recommendation of changes where necessary to enhance efficiency and productivity in the organisation
  • Identification and implementation of training and development programmes/initiatives for continuous improvement of technical and professional competencies of the management team
  • Negotiations with the Group and Affiliate Offices, Data Providers, Banking institutions, lending agencies, and similar entities, establishment and maintenance of effective working relationship with these agencies and other stakeholders
  • Preparation and submission of status quo and other reports; assistance with the preparation of annual reports and other documents as required
  • Representation of the organization at meetings, conferences and other forums as required
  • Provision of leadership and guidance to direct reports through effective planning, delegation, communication, mentoring and coaching
  • Assurance of staff being effectively utilised within the span of control to achieve organizational objectives and enhancement of their professional and/or personal development

b. Strategic Planning

  • Monitoring and evaluation of external and internal factors that may have significant economic, social and other effects on the organization's strategic objectives and operations and making appropriate recommendations for addressing such factors
  • Forecast and analysis of external variables of strategic importance to the organization and assurance of their integration in the planning process
  • Development and implementation of a strategic planning framework including planning tools/templates to guide the development of the strategic and operational plans
  • Assistance of managers in the preparation of strategic and operational plans; monitoring and facilitation of effective collaboration between departments to ensure achievement of overall project/programme objectives
  • Development and implementation of a mechanism that facilitates timely and integrated reporting on strategic programmes and projects
  • Monitoring of programmes/projects implementation, analysis of performance and provision of feedback to managers including recommendations for corrective action where necessary to achieve strategic objectives
  • Maintenance of a comprehensive database of major strategic initiatives

c. Marketing & Product Development

  • Monitoring and assessment of the local economic and political environment in relation to the organization's product portfolio and recommendation of adjustments where necessary to achieve/maintain a relevant and balanced portfolio
  • Leading development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan, periodical reviews and assurance of alignment with the overall strategic objectives of the organization

d. Risk Management

  • Overseeing the design and implementation of an enterprise risk management programme that reflects the organization's overall desire/capacity to bear risk
  • Optimisation of use of risk transfer mechanisms given prevailing market conditions and provision of a mechanism to predict, assess, mitigate, and remedy potential and actual losses to the organization and its reputation
  • Leading development of programmes to foster a culture of risk awareness in the organization
  • Periodical analysis of the organization's exposure to loss and making recommendations where necessary to mitigate potential loss
  • Overseeing the monitoring of the loan portfolio and making recommendations where necessary for to ensure the organization in not exposed to undue risk

e. Other

  • Demonstration of strong business ethics in the execution of corporate and personal affairs and always strives to project and maintain positive corporate image.
  • Keeping abreast of trends in the financial and related industries and adaptation of their use where necessary to enhance the operations of the organization
  • Performance of any other related duties that may be assigned from time to time

Candidate Requirements:

Mandatory:

  • Currently based and / or legally able to work in Uganda
  • Fluent English (both written and oral)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a relevant area of a financial services industry or similar industry like management consultancy and in a general management position
  • Good balance between strong sales and operational management skills
  • Analytical mind with strong business/commercial acumen
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making power
  • Good strategic visionary thinking together with efficient hands-on daily operational management capacity
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Strong relationship building and management skills
  • High goal and results orientation
  • High drive and energy level
  • Presentable and charismatic person with good leadership capacity. Ability to manage, lead and inspire his/her team members
  • High business ethics, integrity and corporate culture

Highly Desirable:

  • University Degree / master’s degree in business administration, Banking or any Financial Services Related discipline is an additional plus:
  • Strong local market knowledge of the financial services industry (main players, influencers, trends, threats and opportunities, etc.)
  • Strong network within the local banking industry and other players of the financial services industry is of high preference
  • High emotional intelligence and maturity
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with ability/potential to develop and grow a business within Financial Services
