Job Summary
The ICU Medical Officer is responsible for the day-to-day medical management of critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. The role involves close monitoring, prompt intervention, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and adherence to established critical care protocols to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Clinical Care
- Provide continuous medical care to critically ill patients in the ICU
- Perform initial assessment, ongoing evaluation, and daily management of ICU patients
- Initiate and manage life-saving interventions, including airway management, ventilation, and hemodynamic support
- Interpret clinical data, laboratory results, imaging, and bedside monitoring.
Patient monitoring and documentation
- Conduct regular patient rounds and update treatment plans
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical records
- Document clinical progress, procedures, and treatment decisions
Emergency response
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and cardiac arrests.
- Participate in resuscitation efforts following ACLS/BLS protocols
- Escalate care to senior physicians or consultants when necessary.
Infection control and safety
- Adhere strictly to infection control policies and ICU safety protocols
- Promote patient safety and quality improvement initiatives
- Follow hospital policies, ethical standards, and legal requirements.
Requirements
- A medical degree from a recognized and reputable institution, an Annual Practicing License and a Registration Certificate.
- Registration as a medical practitioner or eligible for registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council.
- At least one year of professional experience in working in ICU.
- Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
