JOB OVERVIEW:
The IRC was awarded a grant by the IKEA Foundation to implement the Refugees in East Africa: Boosting Urban Innovations for Livelihoods Development (RE: BUILD) program. The one and half year project is being implemented in Kampala and Nairobi. The IRC is the Lead Partner and works with a consortium of local and international partners to deliver the program. The Re: BUiLD seeks to scale on economic self-reliance and benefit from strengthened urban economic, regulatory, and social environments for urban refugees and vulnerable host residents. Further, the Re:Build aims at enabling change at varying levels, from better access to livelihoods opportunities and inclusive services within communities to improved refugee-related policies and more targeted and effective service delivery from national, regional, and global actors.
Reporting to the Senior ERD Officer, the ERD program Assistants will be responsible for accomplishing a series of livelihoods activities to strengthen target clients’ capacity to engage in meaningful income Generating Activities (Enterprises) for self-reliance. The role will support in the oversight of the day-to-day activities of the for both financial inclusion and climate smart interventions in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso.
Responsibilities or duties:
Technical implementation activities:
- Support in the identification, selection, and registration of target clients for both Enterprise growth fund and climate resilient interventions.
- Work closely with community structures to mobilize the target clients and target groups to engage in financial inclusion and climate smart interventions.
- Work with KCCA and Financial institutions to facilitate capacity building training for both individuals and group enterprises including Business skills management, group dynamics, value addition sessions and financial literacy.
- Facilitate the formation and training of groups especially under the KCCA climate smart intervention in the Urban Savings and Loans Association (USLAs) methodology.
- Facilitate progressive urban savings groups, business groups, individual enterprises to register at the division and URSB level to obtain certificates of registration.
- Facilitate Linkage of clients to both financial institutions and potential markets to access various services.
- Participate in resolving conflicts among KCCA climate smart business groups and provide feedback to Sn ERD Officer.
- Conduct training needs gap for both individual and group enterprises supported, for capacity development and performance report to the Sn ERD officer.
- Undertake activities as delegated by the supervisor.
Monitoring, Reporting and Coordination
- Prepare weekly work plans, weekly reports, activity reports and compile some lessons learnt to submit to the Senior ERD Officer.
- Participate in Collection of relevant data during project implementation and provide regular reports to Sn ERD Officer/ MEAL team.
- Coordinate and work closely with the MEAL, Client Responsive and the wider program team, partner staff where necessary to identify program quality issues and as well record some feedback as it comes through the field.
- Coordinate activities closely with partner staff including the financial institutions and KCCA team and collaborate with Government programs implemented in the areas of operation.
- Support and participate in coordination meetings, joint monitoring visits, and other related coordination activities with various project stakeholders.
- Document the best practices implemented, success stories and case studies observed at the individual and group business enterprises for outcome harvesting per approved tools from Communications and MEAL.
- Conduct routine field follow up and monitoring of the individual and group enterprises supported under the financial inclusion and Climate smart interventions for backstopping, cross correction, timely feedback and as well report all their protection concerns.
- Ensure appropriate filing and availability of documentation required for internal and external communication using the approved tools.
- Plan and participate in key events such as trade fairs and other relevant events.
- Be actively present in the selected communities facilitating community dialogues and provide participatory feedback mechanisms.
- Work closely with the Client Responsive team, submit any feedback received for recording and updating in the client feedback registry.
- Participate in program meetings and ensure compliance with the agreed standards.
- With guidance and instructions from the REBUILD protection staff, follow up on all protection related issues.
- Any other duties as guided by the supervisor.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills):
Education
- Diploma in humanities / community development, specialized training in business skills, development approaches for urban poor is an added advantage.
Experience needed:
- A minimum 1 year of working experience in a related field.
- S/he should have some practical field experience in training or working with women saving groups or small-scale businesspeople.
- Flexibility and ability to work under pressure and in constantly evolving work environments.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent writing skills, including report writing,
- Excellent networking and liaison skills,
- Good communication and presentation skills; pay attention to details.
Language Skills:
- Fluency in English Language both written and spoken is required
- Ability to speak the local language is desired; Knowledge of other local languages is an added advantage.
