Background information about the job or company:
To provide expertise in the design, development, and application of computational methods for analyzing and interpreting complex biological data generated from agricultural and animal health research.
Responsibilities or duties:
- Design, implement, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines for analyzing genomic, transcriptomic, and related omics data.
- Collaborate with molecular biologists, plant and animal breeders, pathologists, and other scientists to translate raw data into meaningful biological insights.
- Develop and manage databases for storing, retrieving, and curating biological datasets.
- Apply machine learning and statistical modeling techniques to predict traits, disease resistance, and genetic variability.
- Support projects involving next-generation sequencing (NGS), genome annotation, gene expression studies, and comparative genomics.
- Provide technical support in the use of bioinformatics tools and software to research teams.
- Train scientists, research assistants, and graduate students in bioinformatics methods and best practices.
- Contribute to grant proposals, project reports, and scientific publications.
- Ensure data integrity, quality assurance, and compliance with ethical and institutional data management policies.
- Stay up to date with emerging bioinformatics technologies and recommend their application to NARO research.
Qualifications or requirements:
- Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science (with focus on biological applications), or related field.
- A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related discipline is an added advantage.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in bioinformatics, preferably in agricultural, livestock, or health-related research.
- Proven experience with NGS data analysis, genome assembly/annotation, or transcriptomic analysis.
- Experience with database management and scripting in Python, R, or Perl.
- Familiarity with machine learning applications in biology is an added advantage.
