The Senior CNC Turner Machinist operates, sets up, and programs CNC lathes to produce precision machined components. This expert-level role involves interpreting complex blueprints, selecting tooling, optimizing programs for efficiency, performing first-article inspections, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and dimensional accuracy.
Responsibilities or duties
- Set up, program (using G&M code and/or CAM software), and operate CNC lathes and turning centers.
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, geometric tolerancing (GD&T), and specifications.
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and materials for each job. Perform tool offsets and compensations.
- Optimize machining programs to improve cycle times, tool life, and surface finish.
- Conduct first-article and in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment (e.g., micrometers, calipers, CMMs).
- Troubleshoot machining issues, make adjustments to correct deviations, and minimize downtime.
- Perform routine maintenance on machines and adhere to all shop safety protocols (5S, LOTO).
- Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice and junior machinists.
- Maintain accurate production and quality records.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a certified machining apprenticeship or technical degree preferred.
- Expert in CNC programming (manual and CAM), tooling selection, and blueprint reading. Proficiency with Fanuc, Siemens, or similar controls.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to producing zero-defect work. Ability to lead and train others.

- Minimum 8-10 years of experience as a CNC Turner/Machinist in a job-shop or manufacturing environment.
