Background
Reporting to Chief Legal Officer, the role holder will be responsible for overseeing all legal and contractual aspects for corporate and retail banking borrowers.
The role provides strategic legal advisory on credit matters to business units and drives compliance with internal SLAs. The Manager also coaches, supervises, and guides the Credit Control and Credit Control Securities teams, fostering a high-performing, efficient, and risk-aware operation.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of lawyers specializing in credit and lending documentation.
- Allocate work, monitor performance, and ensure timely delivery of legal support.
- Oversee the preparation of and ensure quality control on the Bank’s credit documents , offer professional legal advice to business units on credit facilities.
- Give advisory on credit-related legal agreements for complex transactions that require expertise judgement and further mitigating credit risk.
- Provide strategic legal insights into credit related matters to players within the credit value chain and train the teams to enhance understanding of legal aspects of credit, addressing emerging issues, and equipping them to manage Legal risks related to credit.
- Oversee compliance and risk management activities within the Legal Credit space, aligning practices with regulatory requirements and business objectives.
- Provide legal advice on structuring credit facilities and complex lending transactions.
- Collaborate with business units to mitigate legal risks while achieving commercial objectives.
- Identify and manage legal risks associated with credit transactions.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and industry best practices.
- Act as the primary legal contact for credit-related matters with internal stakeholders and external counsel.
- Support negotiations with clients and counterparties on credit structures and documentation.
- Develop and implement best practices for credit documentation and legal processes.
- Drive efficiency and turnaround time improvements within the team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Must have a Law Degree from a reputable University.
- Must have a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
- Must be enrolled Advocate of High Court and subordinate Courts.
- Eight (8) years’ experience in working in a busy law firm or financial institution with extensive exposure to banking and finance transactions.
- Exposure to credit documentation.
- Knowledge of banking and credit facilities.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and critical analysis skills.
- Excellent legal drafting skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Self-motivated and result oriented.
- Requires minimum supervision.
- Attention to detail.
- Independence and with good judgement of task.
- Deliver quality output within tight deadlines.
- Ability to manage time and pressure effectively to ensure optimum results.
