Description

Ardenfield Consult (U) Ltd is seeking a technically strong and experienced Senior Tax Associate to support the firm’s tax audit, tax advisory and tax dispute engagements.

The successful candidate will provide technical tax support during URA audits, compliance reviews, investigations, assessments, objections and other tax assignments. The person will also work closely with our financial audit team by reviewing the tax aspects of clients’ financial records and financial statements.

Responsibilities

  • Support clients during URA tax audits, compliance checks and investigations.
  • Review URA audit findings, tax computations and assessment notices.
  • Reconstruct and verify the basis of URA assessments using accounting records and tax returns.
  • Prepare technical responses to URA queries and requests for information.
  • Prepare objection grounds, supporting computations and evidence files.
  • Support Alternative Dispute Resolution and other tax dispute processes.
  • Participate in technical meetings with clients and URA officials.
  • Track outstanding assessments, objections and agreed actions through to resolution.
  • Research and apply Ugandan tax legislation, regulations, practice notes and relevant tax decisions.
  • Review general ledgers, trial balances, payrolls, bank records, contracts and financial statements to identify tax exposures.
  • Reconcile VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, income tax, EFRIS and other tax records to the general ledger and returns filed.
  • Analyse transactions to determine the correct tax treatment.
  • Identify unrecorded or under-declared tax liabilities, unsupported tax positions and potential penalties.
  • Review deferred tax and current tax computations prepared for financial reporting.
  • Prepare clear tax risk schedules for consideration by the financial audit team.
  • Assess whether identified tax exposures require adjustment, disclosure or inclusion in management letters.
  • Provide technical tax input without taking over the financial audit team’s responsibility for the financial statements.
  • Advise teams and clients on the application of Ugandan tax laws.
  • Review complex tax returns and computations before submission
  • Conduct tax health checks and due-diligence reviews.
  • Review EFRIS compliance and related transaction records
  • Support clients with tax planning and transaction structuring.
  • Prepare concise tax opinions, technical memoranda and client reports
  • Train Ardenfield staff on emerging tax risks and changes in tax legislation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Law, Taxation or a related field.
  • At least four years of practical Ugandan tax experience.
  • Direct experience handling URA audits, assessments, objections or tax investigations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of: Income tax and corporation tax, VAT, PAYE and employment taxes, Withholding tax, EFRIS, Tax Procedures Code, Excise duty and other relevant taxes
  • Ability to analyse general ledgers and financial statements from a tax perspective.
  • Experience preparing tax reconciliations, assessment analyses and objection documents.
  • Strong tax research and technical report-writing skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and data-analysis capability.
  • Excellent professional communication and client-handling skills.
  • High integrity, sound judgement and attention to detail.
