Position Summary
A sonographer carries out scan tests and check ups for the patients in accordance to the clinical officer’s request. He/she works directly with the clinical officer and reports to both the clinical officer on the technical areas and the clinic administrator on the administrative areas.
Role Responsibilities
1. Performing Ultrasound Examinations:
- Use ultrasound machines to perform diagnostic imaging on patients.
- Conduct various types of ultrasounds, including obstetric, gynecological, abdominal, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal exams.
- Ensure that the correct imaging technique is used based on the patient's symptoms and medical history.
2. Patient Preparation and Education:
- Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures by explaining the process and ensuring they understand what to expect.
- Position the patient appropriately to obtain accurate images and ensure their comfort during the procedure.
- Ensure that the patient is informed about any preparation required before the exam, such as fasting or drinking water.
3. Obtaining High-Quality Images:
- Operate ultrasound equipment to capture high-resolution images and videos of internal body structures.
- Adjust settings on the equipment to optimize image quality based on the area being examined and the patient's body type.
- Take multiple images or videos to capture all necessary angles or views of the area under examination.
4. Patient Care and Safety:
- Ensure that all ultrasound examinations are conducted in a safe and comfortable environment for the patient.
- Maintain a sterile and hygienic environment during procedures to prevent infection.
- Monitor patients for any signs of distress or discomfort and provide assistance as needed.
5. Collaboration with Medical Staff:
- Work closely with doctors, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate diagnoses.
- Discuss the images and findings with the medical team and contribute to determining the next steps for patient care.
- Follow any special instructions or requests from the referring physician regarding the examination.
6. Documenting and Reporting Results:
- Document ultrasound findings and provide clear, detailed reports to physicians and medical teams.
- Ensure that all images, videos, and notes are properly labeled and archived in the patient’s medical records.
- Highlight any abnormalities or areas of concern in the ultrasound images for further examination by a doctor or specialist.
7. Maintaining Equipment:
- Regularly check and maintain ultrasound equipment to ensure it is in good working condition.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or technical issues to the relevant maintenance staff for repairs.
- Ensure that ultrasound gel and other accessories are available and stored correctly.
8. Ensuring Patient Confidentiality:
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all patient information and records in line with healthcare regulations and ethical standards.
- Follow legal and professional guidelines for handling patient information, including adhering to Uganda’s health data protection laws.
9. Professional Development:
- Keep up to date with the latest advancements in ultrasound technology and diagnostic techniques.
- Participate in ongoing education, training, and certification programs to maintain professional competence.
- Attend workshops, seminars, and other professional development activities as required.
10. Ensuring a Clean and Safe Environment:
- Ensure the ultrasound room and equipment are clean and properly sanitized before and after each use.
- Follow infection control protocols to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
11. Handling Emergency Situations:
- Assist in emergency situations by providing imaging services that may be needed urgently, such as in trauma cases or for pregnancy-related complications.
- Ensure that emergency procedures are handled swiftly and professionally to support timely diagnoses and patient care.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in sonography or a related field and obtained a certificate from a recognized institution
- Proven working experience as a sonographer
- Excellent team player and good at creating team work
- Technical skills to operate the equipment and interpret images accurately
- Strong communication skills to interact with patients and healthcare professionals
- Humble, hungry and smart and Jesus Centered.
- A leader of leaders, Outgoing .
- Single or married with one spouse.
- Analytical in making decisions.
