The Sports Tutor will coordinate, promote and develop sports and recreational activities at the University, contributing to the holistic development of students through physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, leadership and talent development. The successful candidate will support the University's commitment to holistic education, student wellbeing, character formation and community engagement by providing opportunities for students to participate in competitive and recreational sports activities.

Responsibilities or duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Coordinate and manage sports and recreational programmes at the University,
  • Develop and implement the University's sports development plans and activities,
  • Identify, nurture and develop sporting talents among students,
  • Organise training sessions, competitions, tournaments and recreational activities,
  • Coach and mentor students in various sports disciplines,
  • Prepare and manage University teams participating in internal, regional and national competitions,
  • Develop training schedules, fitness programmes and sports development activities,
  • Promote student participation in sports, games and physical wellness activities,
  • Coordinate sports clubs, teams and student sporting associations,
  • Ensure proper registration and management of student athletes,
  • Support selection and preparation of University sports teams,
  • Coordinate participation of University teams in inter-university sports competitions and other recognised events,
  • Promote discipline, teamwork, leadership, fair play and ethical conduct among student athletes,
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to students involved in sports activities,
  • Ensure proper use, maintenance and accountability of sports equipment and facilities,
  • Prepare sports budgets, activity plans and reports for approval and monitoring,
  • Assist in procurement, management and maintenance of sports equipment and materials,
  • Work closely with the Dean of Students, student leaders and relevant University offices to promote student wellbeing,
  • Organise sports awareness, health promotion and physical fitness programmes,
  • Support inclusion of students with disabilities and promote accessible sports activities,
  • Establish partnerships with sports organisations, federations, schools and other institutions,
  • Promote the University's participation and visibility through sports activities,
  • Ensure compliance with sports regulations, safety standards and University policies,
  • Maintain records of sports activities, achievements, participation and performance,
  • Participate in student orientation, community engagement and University outreach activities,
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Dean of Students or other competent University authority.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Applicants should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, Sports Management, Education, Recreation Management or a related discipline from a recognised university,
  • A relevant professional qualification in sports coaching or physical training will be an added advantage.

Experience needed

At least three (3) years of relevant experience in sports coaching, sports administration, physical education or related areas. Demonstrable experience in managing sports teams, competitions or student sports programmes.

Knowledge of sports development, coaching techniques, athlete management and sports safety practices. Strong knowledge of sports management and coaching principles. Ability to motivate and inspire young people. Knowledge of sports regulations and competition procedures. Ability to manage sports equipment and resources responsibly. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse student groups. High levels of integrity, discipline and professionalism. Commitment to student development and holistic education. Experience in one or more of the following areas will be an added advantage: Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball, Athletics, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Indoor games, Fitness and wellness programmes, Sports event management.
