Job Summary
The Hospital Ambulance Driver is a critical member of the patient care and logistics team. This role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely operation of hospital-owned ambulances and transport vehicles for emergency and non-emergency patient transfers. The driver ensures vehicle readiness, provides logistical support to clinical staff (EMTs/Paramedics/Nurses), and maintains compliance with all state regulations. This member will be assigned from time to time other fleet vehicular responsibilities as deemed necessary by the hospital business operation. The position requires unwavering professionalism, situational awareness, and physical stamina in a high-stakes, 24/7 environment.
Job Details
Primary Duty – Safe Vehicle Operation.
Autos & Vehicles
- Operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws and hospital protocols, utilizing emergency equipment (lights/sirens) appropriately as dictated by patient condition and dispatch instructions.
- Demonstrate expert defensive driving skills in all weather, traffic, and lighting conditions (day and night).
- Navigate efficiently using GPS, maps, and knowledge of local geography to ensure prompt response and arrival.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, documenting fuel, oil, tire pressure, and overall mechanical condition.
- Report any vehicle maintenance issues or accidents immediately to the supervisor.
2. Patient Logistics and Support.
- Safely load, unload, and secure patients, ensuring their comfort and safety during transport.
- Assist clinical personnel with moving patients on stretchers, in wheelchairs, and with other medical equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and stocking of the ambulance interior (restocking may be shared duty with medical staff).
- Ensure proper oxygen supply, battery power for monitors, and other essential vehicle-based medical systems are functional.
3. Communication and Documentation.
- Maintain clear, professional, and constant communication with hospital dispatch, ER staff, and receiving facilities.
- Accurately complete electronic or paper logs for each trip (mileage, times, destinations, fuel).
- Adhere to patient confidentiality laws at all times.
4. Safety and Compliance.
Vehicle Codes & Driving Laws
- Comply with all hospital safety policies.
- Maintain a valid and clean state-issued driver’s license with the appropriate endorsements
- Maintain a current driving record that meets hospital insurance standards.
- Participate in required training (driver safety, BLS/CPR, hazardous materials).
5. Additional Fleet Support.
- Operate other hospital fleet vehicles (courier vans, supply trucks) for logistical support as assigned.
- Assist with fleet-related tasks such as light delivery, equipment transport, or vehicle relocation.
Requirements
Education: Either O level or A level Certification. Good to have a diploma.
Licensure/Certification.
- Valid state driver’s license. (Class B, C1, D1)
- First Aid Training
- Defensive driving certification.
- Current CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification good to have. Training will be provided for drivers without this certification.
