Background

The National Agricultural Research Organisation is established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for publicly funded agricultural research in Uganda. The organisation is composed of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for its day-to-day operations with semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARI’s) under its policy guidance. The Director General invites suitably qualified Ugandans to apply for the following positions at PARIs and NARO Secretariat.

Job Purpose

To support research activities in agrometeorology, climate change adaptation, climate modelling, weather data management, and dissemination of climate information for agricultural decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications requirements and Experience

  • A first class or an Upper Second Bachelor’s degree in Agrometeorology, Meteorology, Climate Science, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Agricultural Sciences, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
  • More than one year of working experience in climate-related research, agrometeorology, or environmental data analysis will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of climate variability, climate change adaptation, and agricultural systems.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as R, Python, SPSS, or STATA.
  • Skills in GIS and remote sensing software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or Google Earth Engine.
  • Knowledge of climate and crop simulation models (e.g., DSSAT, APSIM, AquaCrop, WRF, SWAT) is an added advantage.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and implementing agrometeorological and climate-related research studies.
  • Collect, process, and manage meteorological, environmental, and agricultural data from field stations and other sources.
  • Support installation, calibration, operation, and maintenance of weather monitoring equipment.
  • Participate in field surveys and assessments related to climate variability and agricultural production.
  • Support the development and application of climate and crop simulation models.
  • Assist in downscaling climate model outputs for local and regional applications.
  • Utilize statistical and geospatial tools for climate data analysis and visualization.
  • Support acquisition, processing, and interpretation of satellite and remote sensing data.
  • Develop climate and agricultural vulnerability maps.
  • Integrate climate, weather, and agricultural datasets using GIS platforms.
  • Assist in generating agro-weather advisories and climate information products for farmers and other stakeholders.
  • Support dissemination of seasonal forecasts and climate risk information.
  • Participate in stakeholder engagement activities, including training workshops and community outreach programs.
  • Support the development of climate-smart agricultural recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate records of research activities and datasets.
  • Assist in proposal development and resource mobilization efforts.

Tenure of Office

The tenure of office is a 5-year contract renewable upon satisfactory performance.
