This role is based in Kampala and is a core member of the Corporate Relations team. The role holder reports to the UBL Corporate Relations Director and partners closely with the Commercial, Marketing, Supply and Finance Leadership Teams.

- Develops clear, concise plans that are handled through to completion

- Identify clear priorities for strategic implementation
Purpose of Role
Sustainability & EABL Foundation
- Developing and implementing select sustainability initiatives under the Spirit of progress action plan.
- Developing and implementing other ESG initiatives in line with the business overall strategy and plans
Role Responsibilities
Serve as a CR approver for DMC compliance:
- Offering responsible marketing advice to marketing teams to ensure that our brands are marketed responsibly to enhance our reputation and mitigate marketing freedom risks
Team Leadership, Operational Support and Capacity Building:
- Lead and coordinate a team of agencies and implementation partners, providing guidance and support to achieve program objectives. Coach and promote continuous learning and capacity building for the team to enhance programmes delivery.
- Coordinate quarterly Board reporting and other CR team reports
- Ensures strategic alignment with the regional, Africa and global group sustainability strategy
- Support CR director in annual strategy and budget-making process
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to project management and funding.
Deliver CR-owned Spirit of Progress Initiatives:
Water Replenishment
- Design, implement, and oversee water and sanitation projects in targeted communities, ensuring they meet the Spirit of Progress and overall business goals
- Work with local partners, government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to identify needs and coordinate interventions
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs, including delivering Diageo Ongoing project checks and make data-driven adjustments as necessary.
- Scope out relevant partnerships to raise awareness on issues related to water scarcity, sanitation, and hygiene in target communities through campaigns and educational programs
- Oversee the planning and execution of public events to launch and commission completed water and sanitation projects.
- Engage media, influencers, and community leaders during project launches and beyond to raise awareness.
Collective Action on Water
- Identify or design collective action on water initiative in the market, consistent with the Diageo Collective Action on water programme goals. Oversee project implementation and ensure initiatives align with environmental, social, and company sustainability goals.
- Build and manage partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, and stakeholders for water catchment protection projects.
- Monitor project progress, manage resources, and report on impact and outcomes.
- Advocate for sustainable water management and find opportunities to enhance visibility of the initiative.
Circular economy
- Serve as an internal expert on circular economy and climate change (including related legislation) and provide ongoing guidance to relevant teams in the business.
- In close collaboration with supply chain and facilities colleagues, find new and better ways to reduce, reuse, recycle waste from our factories and offices.
- Lead the extended producer responsibility agenda for UBL’s post-consumer packaging waste, i.e. plastics, cans and glass.
- Drive the external sustainable waste management initiatives in partnership with commercial and supply chain teams.
- Drive thought leadership in Circular Economy as a driver of reputation.
Inclusion and Diversity
- I&D in core business: promote inclusive business models within UBL that empower marginalized groups where we source, work, sell and in our communities.
- CR-owned I&D programmes: manage the Learning for Life programme consistent with programme requirements in liaison with the global Spirit of Progress team
- Partner with HR, procurement, and other functions to drive inclusion and empowerment of underrepresented groups e.g., persons living with disabilities, not only among UBL employees but also in the rest of the business’ value chain.
- In collaboration with other functions, find opportunities to advance the empowerment of women in the workplace, marketplace, and communities.
- Promote the adoption and implementation of policies on inclusion and diversity in the business.
- Drive thought leadership on inclusion & diversity as a source of positive reputation.
Local Raw Materials (LRM)
- Sustainable agriculture – collaborate closely with the agribusiness team in designing, developing and embedding sustainable agriculture practices in the agriculture value chain.
- Embed Inclusion and Diversity in the LRM value chain by ensuring that persons with disabilities, women, youth and other underrepresented groups become represented in the agriculture value chain.
- Reputation management – gather information through extensive networking and visits to LRM regions and uncover any potential reputation risks and proactively enhance our reputation.
- LRM branding – produce communication materials for LRM programmes and events in order to enhance our reputation.
- Supporting Foundation initiatives such as water for life and learning for life in LRM Regions.
Doing Business the Right Way from Grain to Glass
- Serve as a sustainability approver for marketing code compliance, offering responsible marketing advice to marketing teams to ensure that our brands are marketed responsibly in order to enhance our reputation and mitigate marketing freedom risks
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to project management and funding.
Advocacy for responsible drinking and self-regulation campaigns:
- Drink-Drive Campaign (WSOTR)
- Consumer Education on responsible alcohol consumption (Drink iQ)
- Anti-underage drinking campaigns (SMASHED)
Experience / skills required:
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Sustainability Studies, Public Relations, Communications, or a related discipline is required.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), communications, stakeholder engagement, or related areas will be considered
- Strong knowledge and understanding of sustainability principles, frameworks (such as GRI Standards or SASB), and best practices are essential. Candidates should be familiar with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues relevant to the beverage industry and have a passion for driving sustainability initiatives.
- Proven experience in engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community groups, customers, and employees, is crucial. Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively manage stakeholder relationships and drive collaboration.
- Understanding of relevant environmental regulations, industry standards, and reporting requirements is necessary. Candidates should be familiar with sustainability reporting frameworks and be able to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- The ability to work in cross-functional teams, inspire change, and foster a culture of sustainability within the organization is important.
