Our vision is a world where people with disabilities, and people with avoidable eye conditions, fully exercise their rights to health, education, work, and protection in emergencies. They are the drivers of change. Our history of improving health systems, enabling education for all, and amplifying the voices of people with disabilities – spans three decades.. Over the last three decades we improved health systems, enabled education for all, and amplified the voices of people with disabilities.

Our programmes in Uganda include:

  • Eye Health – preventing blindness and promoting eye health for all.
  • Inclusive Education – ensuring children with disabilities receive quality, inclusive education.
  • Inclusive Economic Empowerment – ensuring that barriers are removed for men and women with disabilities to access decent work.

We focus on the poorest and hardest to reach because that’s where we will have the biggest impact.

In Uganda, our country strategy for the year 2021-2025 focuses on Eye health, Inclusive Economic Empowerment, Disability Inclusion, and Inclusive Education and implements projects in 15 districts.

We are looking for a committed person to fill the role and be part of this growth.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF ROLE

Reporting to the Head of Disability Inclusion Advisory Unit, the Disability Inclusion Advisor promotes and facilitates disability inclusive practices amongst civil society, public and private actors within the We Can Work Programme.

The Disability Inclusion Advisor (DIA)

  • Provides country-level technical support and coordination for disability inclusion in agrifood systems within the We Can Work program.
  • Provides technical disability inclusion support to Young Africa Works (YAW) agrifood partners to ensure meaningful access for young women and men with disabilities in their programs
  • Collaborates with the Regional Inclusive Agrifood Systems Advisor for technical backstopping
  • Works through, and with, a pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators (DIFs)
  • Ensures high-quality implementation of disability-inclusive practices in agrifood systems across all three pillars

The DIA is expected to be a strong ambassador for disability inclusion in agrifood systems, a hands-on facilitator, and an effective communicator capable of influencing diverse stakeholders.

 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Networking & Partnerships

  • Represent We Can Work in national agrifood networks, local platforms, and government or private-sector forums.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with YAW agrifood partners, private agrifood companies, agricultural training institutions, and OPDs.
  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogue for inclusive agrifood systems solutions at the country level.

2. Advising, Training & Capacity Building

  • Provide hands-on technical support, coaching, and mentoring to DIFs and partner organizations on disability-inclusive agrifood systems.
  • Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of agrifood Disability Inclusion Action Plans (DIAPs) for country agrifood programs.
  • Deliver training workshops, learning sessions, and working groups on disability inclusion in agrifood systems.
  • Tailor advisory support to the contextual needs of organizations, cooperatives, agribusinesses, and value chain actors.

3. Disability Inclusion Facilitator (DIF) Pool Management

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and coaching of DIFs with agrifood inclusion responsibilities.
  • Provide continuous technical accompaniment to ensure quality and consistency in DIF-led training and advisory services.
  • Organize refresher trainings and contribute to a culture of continuous learning.

4. Training Material & Tool Development

  • Contribute to co-creation and human-centred design processes to develop agrifood disability inclusion materials.
  • Adapt training manuals, tools, and resources for national agri-food actors.
  • Identify gaps in materials and propose new tools to strengthen learning and adoption.

5. Knowledge & Information Management

  • Document lessons learned, outcomes, stories of change, and best practices from agrifood inclusion initiatives.
  • Support data collection and analysis for agrifood-related interventions to inform adaptive management.
  • Share insights with country teams and the Regional DI Agri-food Advisor to promote cross-learning.

Requirements

  • University Degree or Higher in field relating to Agriculture, development work, or program management. 
  • At least 4 years of experience working in Non-Governmental Organizations, or Organizations of Persons with Disabilities 
  • Familiar with Adult learning/ participatory training methodologies 
  • High level of exposure to barriers that persons with disabilities face and practical solutions to overcome those barriers, either through life experience or through previous work experience 
  • Experienced trainer and facilitator with experience in designing and conducting skills-building workshops and other capacity development approaches with a variety of stakeholders. 
  • Excellent people skills with the ability to develop others and to impart knowledge and experience in an accessible and clear manner. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Commitment to local capacity building and past experience of engaging and working with local stakeholders in project design and implementation. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in implementation of Livelihoods and Disability inclusion is desired. 
  • Show great initiative and be able to work well in a team and independently. 
  • Ability to produce timely and deliver high-quality results
