The University is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the position of Professor of Medicine.

The successful candidate must demonstrate outstanding academic and clinical leadership, excellence in medical education, postgraduate supervision, research and scholarly publication, clinical practice, curriculum development, innovation, resource mobilisation, and collaboration with healthcare institutions and professional bodies.

Responsibilities or duties

The Professor of Medicine shall report to the Dean, School of Medicine and shall:

  • Provide academic, clinical and research leadership in the Department of Medicine.
  • Lead the planning, development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes.
  • Promote excellence in teaching, clinical practice, research, innovation and scholarly publication.
  • Mentor academic staff, postgraduate students and early-career researchers.
  • Advise the Dean and University Management on matters relating to medical education, research, healthcare innovation and professional practice.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Dean or University Council.

Purpose of the Job

To provide strategic academic and clinical leadership in teaching, research, postgraduate education and community engagement; promote excellence in medical education and evidence-based clinical practice; strengthen research productivity and innovation; enhance postgraduate supervision; foster national and international collaborations; and contribute to the advancement of healthcare, medical knowledge and institutional development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership in the planning, development and implementation of undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes.
  • Design, review and continuously improve the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) curriculum and postgraduate medical programmes in line with national and international standards.
  • Deliver high-quality lectures, tutorials, clinical demonstrations and bedside teaching using innovative and competency-based teaching approaches.
  • Coordinate and supervise clinical training in affiliated teaching hospitals and healthcare facilities.
  • Promote evidence-based medical practice, patient safety, professionalism and ethical conduct among students and staff.
  • Conduct high-quality clinical, biomedical and translational research addressing national, regional and global health priorities.
  • Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly platforms.
  • Supervise undergraduate research projects and postgraduate dissertations and theses at Master's, MMed and PhD levels.
  • Mentor junior academic staff, clinicians and researchers in teaching, research, publication, grant writing and career development.
  • Lead curriculum review, quality assurance and accreditation activities within the Department and School.
  • Develop innovative teaching approaches, simulation-based learning and digital medical education initiatives.
  • Secure competitive research grants and coordinate externally funded research projects.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with teaching hospitals, research institutions, professional bodies, government agencies, industry and international universities.
  • Participate in departmental, school and university governance through committee membership and academic leadership.
  • Provide expert professional services through specialist clinical practice, consultancy, public lectures and advisory services.
  • Lead community health outreach programmes, continuing medical education activities and public health initiatives.
  • Prepare periodic academic, research and departmental performance reports.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the University Management.

Qualifications or requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral qualification in Medicine or a relevant medical specialty from a recognised university.
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, clinical leadership and excellence in medical education.
  • Possess a distinguished record of teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, scholarly publication and academic administration.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Medicine or a relevant medical discipline from a recognised university.
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Registered Specialist Medical Practitioner with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (or an equivalent recognised professional regulatory body).
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive university teaching, research and clinical leadership experience, at least three (3) of which should be at the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent.
  • A demonstrated record of at least eight (8) peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science or equivalent databases.
  • Successfully supervised at least ten (7) postgraduate students to completion, of whom at least two (2) shall have been PhD or MMed candidates.
