ABOUT THE ROLE

The Advocacy and Communications Manager will lead Nama Health Impact's external communications, policy advocacy, and stakeholder engagement efforts. This is a senior role that bridges programmatic evidence and public narrative, driving the organisation's visibility, influence, and credibility with government, donors, partners, and communities. The Manager will work closely with the Executive Director to position Nama Health Impact as a national voice on Community Health Worker policy and community health systems strengthening.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strategic Advocacy

  • Develop and implement Nama Health Impact's annual advocacy strategy aligned with the organizational strategic plan.
  • Lead engagement with government bodies including the Ministry of Health, district health offices, and parliamentary committees on CHW policy and financing.
  • Represent the organisation in national and regional advocacy forums, including Uganda's Community Health Partners Coalition and the United CHWs Association of Uganda.
  • Monitor the policy landscape and proactively identify opportunities to influence legislation, budgets, and health system guidelines affecting CHWs and community health.
  • Develop policy briefs, position papers, and advocacy messaging grounded in organisational data and research.

2. Communications and Brand Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that amplifies Nama Health Impact's mission, evidence, and impact.
  • Ensure consistent use of organisational branding across all platforms, publications, and outreach materials.
  • Oversee production of high-quality materials including annual reports, newsletters, case studies, infographics, and donor updates.
  • Manage and grow the organisation's digital presence including website, social media, and email communications.
  • Craft compelling human-interest stories and testimonials from staff, CHW and community beneficiary experiences.

3. Stakeholder and Partner Engagement

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with government officials, implementing partners, donors, academic institutions, and media.
  • Coordinate communications during high-visibility events such as donor visits, learning exchanges, and media engagements.
  • Support the Executive Director in preparing for board communications, funder presentations, and external speaking engagements.
  • Engage and represent the organisation in global health platforms and networks relevant to community health and CHW advocacy.

4. Media and Public Relations

  • Develop and manage Nama Health Impact's media engagement strategy, including press releases, media kits, and journalist relationships.
  • Serve as the organisational point of contact for media inquiries, in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • Monitor media coverage and manage the organisation's public narrative proactively.
  • Produce content for external publications, op-eds, and conference presentations.

5. Research Translation and Evidence Communication

  • Collaborate with the Research pillar to translate study findings into accessible advocacy and communications products.
  • Support dissemination of research findings to policy audiences, including co-authoring of policy briefs and summaries.
  • Maintain a repository of organisational data, case studies, and learning assets for use in advocacy and communications.

6. Team and Systems Management

  • Line-manage communications staff and consultants where applicable.
  • Develop and manage the advocacy and communications budget in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • Establish monitoring systems to track advocacy outcomes and communications reach.
  • Contribute to organisational grant writing and reporting as it relates to advocacy and communications deliverables.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Health, Public Policy, Journalism, International Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in advocacy, policy engagement, or communications, preferably in the health or development sector.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with government stakeholders and health policy processes in Uganda.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to produce compelling content for diverse audiences from community beneficiaries to government ministers and international donors.
  • Proven track record managing organisational communications, social media platforms, and digital content.
  • Experience in a non-profit or NGO setting, including familiarity with donor communications and reporting.

Desirable

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in community health, CHW programming, or health systems strengthening.
  • Familiarity with Uganda's health sector landscape, including Ministry of Health structures and National Health Strategic Plans.
  • Experience working in or representing organisations at regional and global health forums (e.g., Skoll World Forum, UNGA side events, African health platforms).
  • Proficiency in graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe suite) or experience managing creative production with designers.
  • Fluency in Luganda or other Ugandan languages is an added advantage.
