Purpose of the Role
The Communications and External Relations Volunteer will serve as a key member of Jumuiya Development Foundation’s emerging team, supporting the organization to build a strong, credible, and engaging public presence.
The volunteer will support Jumuiya’s overall communications, visibility, storytelling, and external engagement — including managing the organization’s website and social media platforms, creating written and digital content, documenting meetings and events, supporting report and blog writing, and assisting with communication with partners and stakeholders.
The volunteer may also represent Jumuiya at selected meetings, events, workshops, and networking opportunities when formally delegated by the Co-Founders or Board. The volunteer will not make financial, legal, policy, partnership, or public commitments on behalf of Jumuiya without prior
Key Responsibilities
A. Communications Planning, Branding, and Visibility
- Support the development and implementation of Jumuiya’s communications and visibility plan.
- Help develop and maintain a consistent organizational voice, identity, and messaging across all channels.
- Develop and maintain a monthly communications and content calendar.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen Jumuiya’s visibility among communities, partners, supporters, donors, and networks.
- Support the development of materials that clearly explain Jumuiya’s mission, values, programs, achievements, and engagement opportunities.
- Ensure all communications materials are accurate, professional, accessible, and aligned with Jumuiya’s values and safeguarding commitments.
B. Social Media Management and Digital Content Creation
- Manage Jumuiya’s official social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, and others as identified.
- Plan, draft, schedule, publish, and monitor social media content.
- Create engaging content including posts, captions, graphics, photographs, short videos, reels, stories, campaign materials, and event announcements.
- Develop content that highlights Jumuiya’s programs, activities, volunteers, partners, milestones, and community impact.
- Respond professionally to routine messages and comments; refer sensitive, official, safeguarding, or financial matters to the leadership team.
- Monitor engagement and prepare simple monthly reports on reach, engagement, growth, and content performance.
- Maintain an organized archive of social media content, graphics, photographs, videos, and other digital materials.
C. Website Management
- Support the regular updating and maintenance of the Jumuiya Development Foundation website (jumuiyafoundation.org).
- Upload and update news stories, blog posts, event announcements, program updates, volunteer opportunities, photographs, and organizational documents.
- Ensure that website content remains accurate, current, clear, accessible, and aligned with Jumuiya’s public identity.
- Work with the leadership team to identify areas for improvement and develop new content where needed.
- Ensure website content reflects appropriate consent, confidentiality, and safeguarding standards.
D. Writing, Reporting, Documentation, and Storytelling
- Draft, edit, and support the production of blog posts, news updates, event summaries, newsletters, organizational profiles, press releases, reports, presentations, and other materials.
- Support the preparation of activity reports, partner updates, donor-facing materials, concept notes, briefing notes, and presentations as requested.
- Attend selected meetings, events, workshops, and activities to prepare meeting minutes, summaries, action points, and follow-up documentation.
- Document Jumuiya’s work through stories of change, interviews, quotations, photographs, and short videos.
- Work with staff, volunteers, community members, and partners to collect stories that reflect community experiences, perspectives, and contributions.
- Ensure all documentation and storytelling practices protect the dignity, privacy, safety, and informed consent of community members, especially children and vulnerable groups.
E. External Relations, Partnerships, and Representation
- Support Jumuiya’s communication and relationship-building with partners, stakeholders, volunteers, supporters, and prospective collaborators.
- Represent Jumuiya at selected meetings, workshops, events, and networking opportunities when formally delegated by the Co-Founders or Board.
- Prepare briefing notes, talking points, meeting summaries, and follow-up correspondence for external engagements.
- Support the coordination of meetings with partners and maintain records of key discussions, commitments, and follow-up actions.
- Maintain a simple contact database of partners, stakeholders, media contacts, volunteers, and potential collaborators.
- Identify opportunities for partnerships, public engagement, media visibility, volunteer recruitment, and organizational learning.
- Refer any request involving funding, formal partnerships, public statements, legal matters, or commitments on behalf of Jumuiya to the Co-Founders or Board.
Qualifications & Experience
- A monthly communications and content calendar.
- Regular, high-quality social media content across Jumuiya’s active platforms.
- At least one blog post, organizational update, event summary, or story of change each month.
- Timely website updates, including news, events, opportunities, and organizational information.
- Meeting notes, minutes, action points, and follow-up summaries for selected meetings and events.
- A monthly communications and external relations update outlining activities, content produced, engagement data, achievements, challenges, and priorities.

The ideal candidate should have:
- A diploma, undergraduate degree, or relevant training in communications, journalism, public relations, media, marketing, development studies, international relations, or a related field.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills in English.
- Experience managing social media platforms for an organization, project, business, campaign, or community initiative.
- Basic skills in digital content creation, including graphic design, photography, short-form video, or digital storytelling.
- Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Meta Business Suite, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, WordPress, or other website and communications tools (an advantage).
- Experience taking meeting notes, preparing summaries, drafting reports, or supporting events (desirable).
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
