Company Description
JKCC General Supplies Ltd is a coffee exporting and processing company established in 2017. They aim to develop and promote Uganda’s coffee industry by providing farmers with technical assistance and credit programs. JKCC has grown to operate in 16 districts and benefits over 10,000 farmers across Uganda. JKCC’s approach is to source 100% of all its FAQ coffee directly from Smallholder farmers at a premium to market prices. JKCC processes the FAQ into high-quality green beans before exporting.
Job Purpose
The ESHS Officer is responsible for ensuring that all company activities comply with environmental, social, health, and safety standards, national regulations, and international best practices (e.g., World Bank/IFC guidelines). The role focuses on minimizing risks, protecting workers and communities, and promoting sustainable project implementation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Management
- Implement and monitor the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).
- Ensure compliance with national environmental laws (e.g., NEMA regulations in Uganda).
- Conduct environmental impact monitoring (air, water, noise, waste).
- Manage waste disposal, pollution prevention, and resource efficiency.
- Prepare environmental reports and documentation.
2. Social Safeguards
- Support implementation of Social Management Plans.
- Monitor community health, safety, and social risks.
- Handle grievances through the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).
- Ensure compliance with resettlement and livelihood restoration plans (if applicable).
- Engage stakeholders and local communities effectively.
3. Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
- Enforce site safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard identification.
- Ensure proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
- Conduct safety inspections and audits
- Develop and implement emergency response plans.
4. Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with:
- National laws and regulations
- Donor requirements (e.g., World Bank, IFC Performance Standards)
- Company policies and procedures
- Prepare weekly/monthly/quarterly ESHS reports.
- Maintain ESHS records and documentation.
- Support audits and inspections by regulators or clients.
5. Training & Capacity Building
- Conduct ESHS inductions for new workers.
- Organize regular toolbox talks and safety training.
- Promote awareness on environmental and social risks.
- Build capacity of staff and contractors on ESHS standards
6. Monitoring & Evaluation
- Track ESHS performance indicators (KPIs).
- Conduct site inspections and compliance checks.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Follow up on implementation of mitigation measures.
Execute any other duties as may be assigned by your immediate supervisor

Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Environmental Science
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Engineering
- Or related field
- Professional certifications (added advantage):
- NEBOSH
- IOSH
- OSHA certifications
- 3–5+ years of relevant experience (project/industrial setting preferred)
- Knowledge of:
- National environmental and labor laws
- World Bank/IFC ESHS standards ( desired)
- Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 management system implementation(preferred)
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of ESHS regulations and standards
- Risk assessment and incident investigation skills
- Excellent reporting and documentation skills
- Communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- Ability to enforce compliance diplomatically
