Job Description

On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced Environmental and Social Safeguards Specialist to support the responsible planning and implementation of infrastructure and development projects.

The successful candidate will conduct environmental and social assessments, monitor project compliance, engage affected stakeholders, and help ensure that projects meet applicable legislation, lender requirements, and recognised international safeguards standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental and social screening of proposed projects.
  • Prepare and review environmental and social impact assessments, management plans, and related safeguards documents.
  • Identify potential environmental, social, community health, safety, labour, and resettlement risks.
  • Develop practical mitigation measures and monitor their implementation.
  • Conduct site inspections, compliance audits, and safeguards performance reviews.
  • Support stakeholder mapping, public consultations, and community-engagement activities.
  • Establish and monitor project-level grievance-management mechanisms.
  • Ensure contractors comply with approved environmental and social requirements.
  • Monitor occupational and community health and safety performance.
  • Prepare environmental and social monitoring reports for management, regulators, clients, and funding partners.
  • Support land acquisition, livelihood restoration, and resettlement processes where applicable.
  • Investigate environmental or social incidents and monitor corrective actions.
  • Train project teams and contractors on safeguards responsibilities.
  • Liaise with government authorities, consultants, communities, and development partners.
  • Maintain accurate safeguards records and ensure documentation is audit-ready.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • A master’s degree in Environmental Management, Social Development, Sustainability, or a related discipline will be an added advantage.
  • Relevant professional training in environmental and social safeguards is desirable.
  • At least five years of experience in environmental and social safeguards, impact assessment, sustainability, or community development.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure, energy, construction, agriculture, or development-financed projects.
  • Practical knowledge of environmental and social impact assessment processes.
  • Familiarity with international safeguards frameworks and lender requirements is preferred.
  • Experience facilitating community consultations and managing sensitive stakeholder concerns.
  • Strong report-writing, risk-assessment, analytical, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct regular field visits across Uganda.
  • High levels of integrity, cultural awareness, and professional judgement.
