Mission and objectives

UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

Context

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfil their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

UNICEF supports the Government of Uganda to accelerate progress for children, work to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and help children realize their rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In particular UNICEF’s supported programme aims to ensure (1) every child survives and thrives in good health; (2) every child learns; (3) every child is protected from violence, abuse and exploitation and is registered at birth; and (4) every child lives in a safe and clean environment with access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation; and (5) child friendly policies are implemented and social sectors are adequately resourced.

This is made possible through a strong partnership with government entities, development partners private sector actors, civil society organizations, communities and children and young people.

This United Nations Volunteers (UNV) assignment is part of UNICEF Uganda partnership agenda to mobilize resources for UNICEF’s programmes and for the children of Uganda and to nurture collaboration with development partners and private sector actors to advance the agenda for children and child rights.
