The Plant Accountant is responsible for all accounting and financial activities at the manufacturing plant. This includes cost accounting, inventory control, budgeting, and variance analysis. The role acts as a key business partner to the plant management team, providing data-driven insights to control costs, improve productivity, and enhance profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Accounting: Maintain the standard costing system. Analyze and report on manufacturing variances (material usage, labor efficiency, overhead spending/volume).
- Inventory Management: Oversee all inventory-related accounting, including cycle counts, physical inventories, and reconciliation. Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare timely and accurate monthly financial statements and operational performance reports for the plant.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the development of the plant's annual budget and periodic forecasts, working closely with operational leaders.
- Capital Expenditure (CapEx): Track and analyze capital projects, ensuring proper accounting and reporting.
- Operations Support: Partner with operations management to analyze costs, scrap, productivity, and other key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify improvement opportunities.
- Internal Controls: Ensure adherence to corporate accounting policies and internal controls within the plant environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Certification: CPA or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) is highly desirable.
- Experience: 3+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment is required.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of cost accounting principles (standard costing, variance analysis). Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and advanced Excel skills are essential.

- Analytical & Problem-Solver: Strong ability to analyze data, identify trends, and pinpoint the root causes of cost issues.
- Hands-On & Proactive: Willing to be on the plant floor to understand processes and gather information.
- Collaborative Partner: Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with non-financial personnel in an operational setting.
- Detail-Oriented: High level of accuracy in handling detailed cost and inventory information.
- Organized: Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
