JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose
The position holder will work with the PI, study co-ordinator and other project staff on the MENISCUS (Menstrual health interventions, schooling and mental health symptoms among Ugandan students) study. This school-based cluster-randomised trial is evaluating the effectiveness of a menstrual health intervention on a range of health, educational and wellbeing outcomes among students attending 60 Ugandan secondary schools. The trial was conducted in Wakiso and Kalungu districts. Fieldwork was completed in October 2023. The post-holder will primarily investigate and assess the policy environment around menstrual health in Uganda, focusing on how implementing the intervention contributes to, and aligns with, the attainment of the Government policy objectives on menstruation management in schools. The post-holder will adopt the basic approach to policy analysis of assessing the inclusiveness, magnitude of the problem; feasibility and clarity of objectives and implementation, social and economic environment; monitoring and evaluation frameworks and sustainability.
The project team lead will report directly to the Study Co-ordinator, be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers within Uganda, the UK and internationally and will work closely with colleagues at Makerere University - School of Economics.

Roles & Responsibilities
Portfolio Management;
• To conduct a policy analysis including identifying the key objectives of relevant menstrual health policies in Uganda, and how the MENISCUS intervention contributes to, and aligns with, these objectives;
• Conduct literature reviews of menstrual health policies;
• To assess the extent to which the trial findings inform how these policies can be optimally delivered nationally;
• To represent the unit at regular national stakeholder workshops such as the Ministry of Education and Sports Technical Working Group meeting on Adolescent and School Health, the Ministry of Health Technical Working Group on school health, the menstrual health coalition at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and other relevant policy stakeholder meetings;
• Co-ordinate and supervise a team of 3 research assistants, including participating in staff training, to ensure that staff are correctly carrying out their duties;
• To submit, attend and present (online or in person) the results of the research at selected conferences;
• To contribute to peer-reviewed publications;
• Participate in the Trial Co-ordination team meetings; and,
• Assist in preparation of dissemination activities.

Line Management;
• Supervise the research assistants and ensure that there is a well-defined and documented delegation of duties with ongoing performance management of all qualitative work; and,
• Ensure that staff professional development is nurtured in line with the Unit’s and LSHTM’s capacity building goals, there is a positive and supportive work environment in the department, staff feel included and valued and their professional feedback and proposals are heard and considered, staff expectations are clearly communicated, staff performance is regularly monitored and potential conflicts are resolved promptly and decisively, involving HR support where needed.

Financial Management;
• Assist the study Principal Investigator in conjunction with the operational and finance team to ensure strong budget and resource management in line with approved budget and sponsor and institutional requirements.

Person Specification
• A degree in a relevant discipline;
• A certificate in policy analysis would be an added advantage;
• Must have at least 2 years’ experience in conducting policy analyses;
• Experience working on an impact evaluation;
• Experience conducting stakeholder engagements;
• Experience writing policy documents
• Should possess good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel and
• PowerPoint);
• Should be organized with excellent attention to detail;
• Excellent management, networking, and communication skills (written and verbal);
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines;
• Interest in adolescent health; and,
• Interest in health research.
