Background
The Forum for Education NGOs in Uganda (FENU) is implementing a research study to assess subject-specific and gender-responsive teacher recruitment and deployment gaps in government and grant-aided secondary schools across 75 districts in Uganda.
The Research Supervisor will oversee field implementation of the data collection. The role is responsible for supervising Research Assistants, ensuring adherence to research protocols, maintaining data quality, and providing timely reporting throughout the field exercise.
The Research supervisor will support the supervision of the data collection to ensure high-quality of data is obtained through out the exercise.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Field Planning and Preparation
- Participate in and support the induction and training of Research Assistants.
- Coordinate field deployment and school assignments.
- Ensure all field teams have functional equipment and understand the study procedures.
Field Supervision
- Provide daily technical and operational support to Research Assistants.
- Monitor implementation of field activities and adherence to research protocols.
- Conduct routine field accompaniment and spot-check visits to verify data quality.
- Report operational and logistical challenges encountered during data collection.
Quality Assurance
- Review submitted questionnaires for completeness, consistency and accuracy.
- Provide feedback to Research Assistants and ensure identified errors are corrected promptly.
- Monitor achievement of daily field targets and support teams experiencing delays.
Reporting and Coordination
- Conduct regular briefing and debrief meetings with field teams.
- Compile daily and weekly field progress reports.
- Report safeguarding concerns, ethical issues or suspected data falsification to project management.
- Prepare and submit the final supervisory report upon completion of fieldwork.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education, Statistics, Public Health, Development Studies or another relevant discipline.
- At least three years of experience supervising field research, surveys or monitoring activities.
- Demonstrated experience supervising teams using KoboCollect, ODK or similar digital data collection systems.
- Previous experience managing education sector research is an added advantage.
Competencies
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent analytical, communication and report writing skills.
- High level of integrity and commitment to research quality.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to coordinate multiple field teams under tight timelines.
- Willingness to travel extensively within assigned regions.
