On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Senior Research Associate – Animal Health. Both ILRI and The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT are CGIAR Research Centers.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa

About the position
The Senior Research Associate – Animal Health will support implementation of research in Uganda in the framework of the One CGIAR Initiative “Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion” (SAPLING). The aim of SAPLING is to enable 800,000 livestock producers – especially women and youth in 7 countries to engage in inclusive livestock value chains and achieve sustainable productivity gains resulting in improved livelihoods. Uganda is one of seven countries identified as a focus country for this initiative given the importance of livestock in the livelihoods of its people and the commitment of public and private actors to transform food systems through sustainable livestock development.
The Senior Research Associate will support the implementation of field activities and data management, working closely with work package focal persons. The Research Associate will report to the Field Coordinator and the Uganda SAPLING country lead. The position will be based at Alliance/ILRI office in Uganda.

Responsibilities
• Contribute to the design planning and implementation of research activities related to Animal and Herd Health under SAPLING related project at ILRI in Uganda
• Conduct epidemiological investigation of livestock diseases including laboratory analysis
• Write technical reports, brief and other communication materials
• Participate in the preparation and publication of research results/reports
• Lead implementation of field activities including questionnaire design using ODK, data collection and processing
• Assist in organizing workshops, training or field work as required
• Engage with project partners and government institutions for dissemination of project outputs through meetings and feedback workshops

Requirements
• At least a MSc degree or equivalent qualification and experience in veterinary Epidemiology, Veterinary Sciences, Animal Health.
• At least two years of relevant professional experience, preferably in livestock production systems in Uganda (especially pigs and or cattle) and in a multidisciplinary working environment
• Experience in participatory approaches and stakeholder engagement
• Experience in modelling livestock disease control options
• Strong computer skills in relevant office application software packages (i.e. MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access).
• Strong statistical analysis skills (i.e. STATA, SPSS)
• Fluency in English is essential to communicate in writing and speaking
• Ability to communicate effectively with different stakeholders from inside and outside of Uganda
• Ability to manage field teams and uphold the highest ethical standards by inspiring trust and treat all people with respect and personal integrity
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with researchers, enumerators, and livestock value chain actors
• Demonstrated skills in data management and implementation of electronic data collection in surveys
• Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and ability to work collaboratively with people at all levels and from multiple disciplines and cultures in a respectful manner
Willingness to travel locally, regionally, and internationally

Benefits
Terms of employment
This is a locally recruited position, and all benefits are denominated and paid in Ugandan Shillings. The Alliance of Bioversity CIAT remuneration package includes a competitive salary, leave provisions and medical insurance. The initial contract will be for a period of two (2) years, subject to a probationary period of six months and is renewable based on performance and availability of funds.
