ABOUT THE ROLE
The Tank Farm In-Charge is a senior operational role responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the tank farm, ensuring proper storage and handling of petroleum products. The role requires coordination with multiple departments, management of staff, and a strong focus on safety, compliance, and operational excellence. The ideal candidate is required to possess hands-on leadership, sharp judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced and high-responsibility environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily Operations & Inventory Management
- Oversee daily tank farm operations, including receipt, storage, and dispatch of petroleum products, ensuring stock accuracy and product integrity.
- Monitor product levels to optimize inventory management and minimize losses.
- Monitor and control stock losses, investigate discrepancies, and reconcile inventory promptly.
- Supervise Gantry In-Charges, ensuring safe and efficient loading operations.
- Coordinate with control room, jetty operations, QA/QC, and planning teams for smooth product transfers.
Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response
- Conduct regular safety inspections, safety briefings, risk assessments,and emergency drills and implement control measures.
- Ensure strict adherence to health, safety and environmental (HSE) guidelines, company policies, and government regulations.
- Lead emergency responses and coordinate with external agencies when necessary.
- Supervise offloading activities from vessels, adhering to safety, quality, and operational protocols.
Record Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of tank farm activities, including inventory, movements, and compliance documentation.
- Prepare operational reports, highlighting inventory levels and opportunities for efficiency improvements.
Leadership & Team Development
- Train and develop a team of operators, technicians, and support staff, fostering accountability and continuous improvement.
- Provide operational insights and recommendations to the Terminal Manager for process improvements and cost reductions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in tank farm operations, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of petroleum storage, handling processes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Strong leadership and team management skills with hands-on operational focus.
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and operational judgment.
- Proficiency in tank farm management software and other operational tools, Microsoft Office tools and SAP familiarity is encouraged.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements governing fuel terminal operations across East Africa is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, resilience under pressure, and ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Action-oriented, proactive, and confident in taking charge.
- Respected leader who drives team performance and enforces accountability.
