About AsOne Ministries

AsOne Ministries is a Christ-centered, non-profit organization committed to making disciples of Jesus and creating sustainable solutions in education, enterprise, health, and agriculture. We exist to end spiritual, relational, and economic poverty — one community at a time — by investing in holistic development in rural, underserved communities across Uganda. Our mission is rooted in personal and communal transformation that reflects the love and truth of Christ.

Position Summary

As the School Driver at AsOne Ministries, you will be responsible for the safe, reliable, and professional transportation of students, staff, and visitors using the school's coaster bus and van. This role carries significant responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the children and staff on board at all times, as well as for the proper care, maintenance, and security of the school vehicles. You are expected to uphold the professional code of conduct for staff working with children and to represent AsOne Ministries with courtesy, discipline, and integrity on and off the road.

Key Responsibilities

Safe Transportation of Students & Staff

  • Safely drive the school coaster and van to transport students, staff, and visitors to and from school, home, field trips, sports events, church activities, and other authorized destinations.
  • Follow designated routes and schedules for daily student pick-up and drop-off, adjusting only with approval from the Head Teacher or Director of Operations.
  • Drive at safe, controlled speeds at all times, strictly observing Uganda traffic laws, road signs, and school policy on child transportation.
  • Ensure all passengers, especially children, are seated safely and securely before moving the vehicle, and that doors are properly closed and locked while in motion.
  • Assist children, especially younger or nursery-age learners, in safely boarding and alighting the vehicle at each stop.
  • Maintain calm, disciplined order among passengers during transit, and report any behavioural concerns to the relevant teacher or the Director of Studies.
  • Never leave children unattended in the vehicle at any time, and conduct a full check of the vehicle after every trip to ensure no child is left behind.

Vehicle Care & Maintenance

  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the coaster and van, checking tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors, fuel, oil, water, and overall roadworthiness before every journey.
  • Keep the interior and exterior of both vehicles clean, tidy, and presentable at all times.
  • Promptly report any mechanical faults, damage, or safety concerns to the Director of Operations and ensure vehicles are not driven if unsafe.
  • Coordinate and schedule routine servicing, repairs, and maintenance for both vehicles in line with the manufacturer's recommended schedule and school policy.
  • Ensure the vehicles' insurance, road licence, inspection stickers, and other statutory documents are valid and up to date, flagging renewal deadlines to the Director of Operations in good time.
  • Maintain an accurate logbook recording mileage, fuel consumption, trips undertaken, and any incidents for both vehicles.

Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response

  • Hold and maintain a valid driving permit in Classes D and D1 (covering the school coaster and van) and ensure it remains valid throughout employment.
  • Carry out all duties in strict compliance with Ugandan traffic laws and any school transport safety policies.
  • Maintain a valid first aid kit and fire extinguisher in each vehicle and know how to use them in the event of an emergency.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies, prioritizing the safety of all passengers and promptly notifying the Director of Operations and, where relevant, parents/guardians.
  • Avoid the use of a mobile phone or any other distraction while driving, except for hands-free emergency communication.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or any substance that could impair judgment or reaction time.

Administrative & Collaborative Duties

  • Coordinate daily transport schedules with the Head Teacher, Director of Operations, and relevant teachers to ensure timely pick-up and drop-off of students.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents, guardians, and school staff regarding transport timing, delays, or changes.
  • Assist with the loading, transport, and unloading of school materials, supplies, or equipment as needed, alongside student transport duties.
  • Support school trips, outreach programs, sports events, and other off-site activities by providing safe transport for students and staff.
  • Report any recurring transport issues, safety concerns, or improvement suggestions to the Director of Operations.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Teacher or administration as needs arise.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: A minimum of an O-Level certificate; further training in defensive driving or vehicle mechanics is an added advantage.
  • A valid driving permit in Classes D and D1, covering the school coaster and van, with a clean driving record.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience, with proven experience driving coaster buses or similar passenger vehicles; experience transporting school children is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Ugandan traffic laws, road safety regulations, and basic vehicle maintenance.

Competencies & Attributes

  • Calm, patient, and responsible disposition, especially when transporting children.
  • Strong sense of punctuality, discipline, and reliability.
  • Good knowledge of local roads, routes, and communities served by the school.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to identify vehicle faults and carry out simple checks.
  • Calm under pressure, with the ability to handle emergencies or breakdowns responsibly.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism, particularly regarding the safety and wellbeing of children.
  • Genuine alignment with the mission, values, and Christian ethos of AsOne Ministries Uganda.
