THE JOB

As the Business Director for the Uganda market, you will serve as the entity's statutory Principal Officer, registered with the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA). This is a dual-mandate, execution-focused leadership role: build and run the client’s Uganda business commercially - closing partnerships and driving B2B revenue and distribution - while personally carrying accountability for regulatory compliance, governance, and reporting to the IRA under the Insurance Act, 2017 and applicable microinsurance and bancassurance guidelines.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Drive B2B partnerships and revenue growth - identify, negotiate, and close strategic partnerships with insurers, mobile network operators (MNOs), banks, MFIs, corporates, and other distribution players to grow health and insurance premium volumes.
  • Own the full B2B sales cycle for key accounts - personally manage high-value partner relationships from prospecting through contracting, onboarding, and ongoing performance management, ensuring consistent achievement of monthly and annual revenue targets.
  • Act as the registered Principal Officer with the IRA - maintain full compliance with the Insurance Act, 2017 and IRA guidelines and directives; ensure timely preparation and submission of all required returns, risk reports, and governance documentation, working closely with the Compliance and Legal teams.
  • Provide leadership to the Board and Group - prepare and present clear quarterly business performance, financial, compliance, and risk updates; ensure the team delivers operational excellence across distribution, claims, and partner service.
  • Build and lead the local team - recruit, coach, and manage the Uganda team, instilling a culture of accountability, compliance, and customer-first execution.
  • Identify new growth opportunities - continuously refine the business model, explore new digital distribution channels, and propose product and market-expansion opportunities within Uganda's microinsurance and health-financing space, in collaboration with partner insurers and internal teams.
  • Own financial and risk stewardship - lead budgeting and forecasting, and monitor key commercial and risk metrics (loss ratios, persistency, partner performance).

QUALIFICATIONS

The job holder should have the following qualifications.

  • ACII (UK), a Diploma in Insurance from the Insurance Training College / Insurance Institute of Uganda, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the IRA as meeting Principal Officer requirements - MANDATORY (or demonstrable eligibility for IRA "fit and proper" approval).
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant professional experience in insurance, financial services, or telecom-led distribution, including 3+ years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Proven success closing and managing B2B partnerships (MNOs, banks, MFIs, corporates preferred).

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills and competencies.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of the IRA's regulatory framework and Uganda's insurance and health landscape.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, relationship-building, and people-leadership skills.

  • Ability to build revenue pipelines and consistently meet commercial targets.
  • Experience managing compliance documentation and regulatory submissions.
  • Proficiency analysing sales data, performance metrics, and partner reports.
