Kyagalanyi Coffee, Uganda, is seeking an Agronomist to join the Volcafe Global Coffee Research Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research programs on coffee crop estimation in East Africa. Fluency in English and local languages is required, along with 2-3 years of relevant experience. The role will report to the Deputy Head of Agronomy at Volcafe.

Our Volcafe Way farmer support program engages with thousands of coffee farmers and provides a holistic response to the challenges they face.

Responsibilities

  • Effective Implementation of Crop Tour Methodology for Crop Estimation.
  • Collect primary and secondary data to assess both current and future production.
  • Plan and conduct regular crop tours to estimate production using a) High-quality farmer interviews, b) Visual yield estimation.
  • Collect data on coffee areas from a) official sources regularly, b) farmer interviews, c) visual estimation of area changes for confirmation, and d) information from third parties such as research institutes, nurseries, and state farms.
  • Evaluate the risks to crop estimates by analysing various scenarios. Assess the impact of different factors on yields and their associated probabilities, such as weather, pests, diseases, and fluctuations in costs or the availability of inputs and labour.
  • Monitor weather developments and long-term forecasts to update production estimates.
  • Collect data on coffee production costs and its competing crops to conduct a gross margin analysis and assess its implications.
  • Conduct regular stock surveys to reconcile with the balance sheet.
  • Communicate findings through a well-structured crop tour report.
  • Estimate crop flow and regularly review harvest progress.
  • Analyse trade flow data consistently, identify changes, and update the group, while preparing a comprehensive report monthly.
  • Collaborate closely with traders to identify trading opportunities in the region.

Skills and Experience

  • Graduate or post-graduate degree in Agriculture or Agronomy.
  • Strong knowledge of coffee agronomy; preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in implementing coffee crop estimation programs. Freshers with a strong academic background are eligible to apply.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly advanced skills in Excel.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English and local languages.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and extensively to coffee-growing regions for crop tours.
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills.
