ETG Sustainable Coffee

In Uganda, ETG is leading operations from Namanve warehouse in Kampala, overseeing several processing and warehouse units in Uganda that process coffee and warehouses inputs.

ETG’s responsible sourcing program for coffee has grown substantially over the past three years, covering over 20,000 farmers. Dedicated certified supply chains have been established, various donor and client projects have successfully kicked off, and the first learnings have been gathered and processed. Projects include regenerative agriculture trainings, sector collaboration on child labour monitoring, biochar R&D, inclusion of youth via service groups and diversification, composting activities, and establishing village savings and loans associations and training participants. The Coffee Sustainability team in Uganda is well established and ready for expansion.

The Role

ETG Uganda is looking for a Coffee Sustainability Manager Uganda who will work closely with the three Project Officers who are responsible for the implementation and execution of projects and work directly with the field teams (Eight staff in various areas). You will work closely with the coffee procurement team in the Kampala office to establish prefinance for dedicated certified suppliers, support with traceability structures and implementation and align closely on potential expansion options for certified coffee sourcing. Additionally, you we be the link between the team in Uganda and the Global team for client and donor projects and proposals, alignment with the trade desk on RS volumes and HQ sustainability team to ensure to have an up to date working structure to comply with all new and current regulations.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Manage a team of sustainability officers, agronomists and other staff involved in our sustainability activities
  • Oversee sustainability programs, ensuring effective implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of environmental and social initiatives
  • Pursue and manage grants to support sustainability projects, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and effective utilization of resources
  • Coordinate and lead donor and client visits while preparing and delivering group and local presentations to showcase the company’s sustainability initiatives, communicate progress, and strengthen stakeholder relationships
  • Oversee internal and external audits conducted by the company or third parties, ensuring compliance with sustainability standards such as Rainforest Alliance, Organic or our inhouse standard Beyond Beans, and continuous improvement in processes
  • Further build and expand on the current established structures, including standardizing M&E frameworks and expansion of RS supply chain
  • Drive due diligence and ensure traceability in supply chain and ETG processing team to comply with international regulations such as EUDR and CSDDD
  • Set up responsible commercial supply chains with Farmer Groups
  • Aligning and monitoring budgets and finances, HR and legality work related to projects and country sustainability team.

Key Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master’s degree in any relevant field
  • 5+ years’ experience with implementing sustainability programs including managing project teams, administrative responsibilities and proposal writing
  • Experience with reporting to different stakeholders such as clients, partners, and internal management
  • Knowledge of and experience in implementing different types of certification schemes such as RFA, 4C and Organic is a plus
  • Knowledge of and experience in carbon and regenerative agriculture programs is a plus
  • Knowledge of (smallholder) commodity supply chains • Experience and network in coffee sector in Uganda is a plus
  • Fluent in English.
