JOB DETAILS:
About the Make Way programme
Make Way aims to break down barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by promoting the use of an intersectional lens. This means looking at the effects of overlapping forms of vulnerabilities, for example those relating to gender, religion, ability, ethnicity, sexual orientation or social status. Applying this lens uncovers power dynamics plus interrelated and systemic barriers that prevent people with compounded vulnerabilities, especially youth, from realising their SRHR.

We develop innovative tools for intersectional SRHR advocacy. And we work with other civil society organisations to push for the structural changes that break the barriers that minoritised young people experience.

In a world where everyone can realise their SRHR:
• Societal views and norms regarding gender and other relevant issues are inclusive and do not stigmatise or lead to discrimination.
• Sexuality education is comprehensive and inclusive.
• Health systems have sufficient funding and are appropriately staffed to provide quality SRH services for everyone.
• Youth facing compounded vulnerabilities are involved in decision-making affecting their lives.
• Civil society organisations working on SRHR can count on support, both financially and in other ways.
• Intersectional awareness is part of the SRHR agenda.
• Make Way has six core partners who strengthen each other with their specific areas of expertise: Akina Mama wa Afrika, The Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians – Kenya, Forum for African Women Educationalists, Liliane Foundation, VSO Netherlands and Wemos. We work in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Together, we implement Make Way in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, the (Eastern and Southern) African region and at a global level.

Communication consultant
• 2-3 days a week from October until October 2024 – with possible extension
• We are looking for a consultant to gather and create appealing stories on programme activities and its impact in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia. The stories will be disseminated through the website of Make Way (www.make-way.org) and the (social media) channels of the core partner organisations. Preferably, some of the stories are also picked up by external local, regional, (inter)national media.

What will you be doing?
• Together with the communication officers of the partner organisations, you identify and create stories for the Ethiopian, Kenyan, Rwandan, Ugandan and Zambian contexts, as well as for the regional and global context.
• Together with the communication officers of the consortium partner organizations coordinating the Make Way programme in the country, you decide on potential stories.
• You reach out to people and organisations to prepare for meetings, interviews, etc.
• You develop content (e.g. (video) interviews, photo stories, videos) that shows the impact of the programme and that is appealing to a wide audience.
• You create texts and social media posts to promote the stories.
• You strive to get (inter)national media attention for the stories and/or the programme.
• Participate in the meetings of the Communications Forum of Make Way, which brings together the communication staff from all the consortium partners in the six contexts.
• Position
• You will report to the communication manager in the Programme Coordination Unit of the programme. On a day-to-day basis you will work with the communication officers of the consortium partner organizations.
